1. Technology overview
Akselos S.A. is headquartered in Nyon, Switzerland, and was founded on simulation technology developed at MIT. It operates in North America, the Middle East, Europe and Southeast Asia, and helps operators of refineries, fertilizer plants, LNG terminals, offshore platforms and wind assets understand the real structural condition of critical equipment.
Its Structural Performance Management software builds a live structural digital twin from existing drawings, sensor data, inspections and historian records, without new sensors. The patented Reduced-Basis Finite Element Analysis (RB-FEA) re-solves models in seconds, within 1% of full FEA accuracy and about 1,000 times faster than conventional simulation. Results are API 579 and ASME compliant and delivered through live visualization, reports and APIs.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Live structural twin: combines drawings, sensors, inspections and historian data into one model.
- RB-FEA engine: re-solves model changes in seconds with accuracy within 1% of full FEA.
- Remaining life assessment: estimates fatigue, bulging and crack growth separately for each mechanism.
- Code compliance: results are aligned with API 579 and ASME standards.
- No new instrumentation: works with data operators already collect.
- Integration and reporting: live visualization, reports and API connections to other systems.
3. Potential application
A refinery or fertilizer plant in Vietnam could assess remaining life of coke drums, vessels or piping before a turnaround. An offshore operator could prioritize inspection of FPSO hull hotspots. A wind farm owner could evaluate structural margins of turbine foundations.
4. Benefits
Operators can extend asset life and defer capital spending based on calculated remaining life rather than conservative assumptions. Akselos reports up to EUR 32 million of deferred CAPEX for Adriatic LNG and 33% lower OPEX on the Shell Bonga FPSO hull work. No new hardware is required, because the twin uses existing data.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Process plants and energy assets across Southeast Asia are ageing while owners try to postpone replacement spending. Physics-based digital twins that use existing data give integrity teams explainable evidence for life extension, an area where generic AI models are harder to certify.
6. Other information
Akselos S.A. is headquartered in Nyon, Switzerland, and its technology originated at MIT; co-founder Thomas Leurent leads the company. It holds ISO 27001 certification, won a World Oil Best Digital Transformation Award and has a Shell enterprise agreement. It operates in North America, the Middle East, Europe and Southeast Asia.
