1. Technology overview
H2SITE (Hydrogen Onsite, S.L.) is an industrial company based in Loiu, Bizkaia, Spain, that produces and separates hydrogen with membrane technology. It addresses a key bottleneck of the hydrogen economy: recovering pure hydrogen from carriers such as ammonia and methanol, and from gas mixtures in pipelines and underground storage.
Its palladium-alloy membranes are selective to hydrogen and are used in two product families. Membrane reactors combine reaction and separation in one step for ammonia cracking on board ships, at ammonia import terminals and in industry and mobility, and for bio-hydrogen from waste via an upgraded water-gas shift. Membrane separators recover hydrogen from natural gas blends in pipelines, from salt caverns or aquifers and from natural hydrogen mixtures, and purify it to more than 99.97% in a single step. The company reports more than 50,000 operating hours.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Palladium-alloy membranes: hydrogen-selective membranes reaching 99.97% purity and higher.
- Ammonia on board: onboard cracker for maritime ammonia-to-power systems.
- Ammonia imports: membrane reactors that cut ammonia consumption at terminals.
- Gas infrastructure management: separation of hydrogen transported pure or blended with natural gas.
- Hydrogen storage recovery: pure hydrogen from salt caverns, depleted gas deposits or aquifers.
- Bio-hydrogen from waste: integrated separation in water-gas shift for biogas or syngas.
3. Potential application
Refineries and fertiliser plants in Vietnam could purify by-product or imported hydrogen with membrane separators. Gas distributors studying hydrogen blending in industrial park networks could recover pure hydrogen for fuel cell users. Shipping companies could evaluate onboard ammonia crackers for coastal or offshore support vessels.
4. Benefits
A single membrane step delivers hydrogen above 99.97% purity with recovery of up to 98%, reducing the purification equipment needed downstream. For ammonia imports, membrane reactors lower ammonia consumption compared with traditional cracking, which improves hydrogen cost. Gas network operators can blend hydrogen into existing pipelines and recover it at the point of use.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Ammonia is becoming the preferred carrier for long-distance hydrogen trade, which creates demand for efficient cracking at ports and on ships. Japan, Korea and Singapore are building ammonia import chains, and Vietnam's 2024 hydrogen strategy considers both green hydrogen and ammonia, so compact cracking and purification equipment is relevant to ports and industrial hubs in the region.
