1. Technology overview
HDF Energy was founded in December 2012 by Damien Havard, is headquartered near Bordeaux, France, and has been listed on Euronext Paris since 2021. It develops large-scale hydrogen infrastructure and manufactures multi-megawatt fuel cells so that grids, industry, ports and railways can obtain firm, low-carbon electricity. Its APAC office has operated in Jakarta, Indonesia, since 2020.
The Renewstable hydrogen power plant combines solar or wind with batteries for short gaps and green hydrogen, produced by electrolysis and stored in tanks, for long periods without sun or wind; an energy management system delivers a guaranteed 24/7 or peak profile at a set price for more than 20 years. HyPower plants turn pipeline or by-product hydrogen into on-demand power. HDF develops, finances through an SPV, builds and operates projects, using its FC1500 PEM fuel cell, rated up to 1.5 MW per unit and built in its 100 MW Blanquefort factory.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Renewstable plant: solar or wind with batteries and hydrogen storage for firm 24/7 power.
- HyPower: multi-MW fuel cell plants that convert pipeline or by-product hydrogen into power.
- Green hydrogen production: electrolysis plants supplying refining, ammonia and steel.
- FC1500 fuel cell: PEM unit rated up to 1.5 MW, developed with Ballard Power Systems.
- Energy management system: decides when to charge, discharge, produce or consume hydrogen.
- Integrated delivery: development, SPV financing, construction and 20-year operation.
3. Potential application
Island districts such as Phu Quoc or Con Dao could replace diesel generation with a Renewstable plant delivering firm power. Industrial parks with large rooftop solar could add hydrogen storage for night-time supply. Ports could use HyPower fuel cell plants for shore power to berthed vessels.
4. Benefits
Utilities and industrial users receive firm renewable power on a guaranteed baseload or peak profile, instead of intermittent output, at a stable price for more than 20 years. HDF handles development, financing, construction and operation, which reduces execution risk for the offtaker. The FC1500 fuel cell has efficiency above 50%, a lifetime of more than 25 years and quick response to demand changes.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Island and remote grids across Southeast Asia still rely heavily on diesel and need firm renewable capacity, not only intermittent solar. Indonesia and the Philippines are already discussing hydrogen-integrated power plants with HDF, and Vietnam's 2024 hydrogen strategy and its island and off-grid areas face similar needs for stable, low-carbon supply.
6. Other information
Founded in 2012 and listed on Euronext Paris in 2021. Offices in Bordeaux, Mexico City, Barbados, Cape Town and Jakarta, plus a US office opened in 2025. Its Blanquefort fuel cell factory opened in 2024 with French State and IPCEI support, and in 2025 it formed a maritime partnership with ABB Marine & Ports. In Indonesia it has a Joint Development Study Agreement with PLN Nusantara Power and an exclusive partnership with Pertamina NRE.
