1. Technology overview
Makr Shakr is an Italian company that builds robotic bar systems in its factory in Turin. Its first robotic bartender prototype, created with MIT Senseable City Lab, The Coca-Cola Company and Bacardi, debuted at Google I/O in 2013, and the company launched as a startup in 2017 with Carlo Ratti as founder. It serves hotels, casinos, cruise ships, airports, clubs and entertainment venues that want fast, consistent drink service with a visual attraction.
The flagship Toni uses two robotic arms to prepare, shake, stir and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from 158 bottles of spirits and juices hung from the bar ceiling, at more than 80 drinks per hour with four illuminated pickup spots. Recipes are unlimited and the movements are modelled on a bartender's choreography. Compatto targets high-traffic areas and Veloce targets dance clubs that need faster ordering.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Dual robotic arms: prepare, shake, stir and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
- Large ingredient library: arms reach 158 bottles of spirits and juices hung from the ceiling.
- High throughput: Toni is rated at more than 80 drinks per hour.
- Unlimited recipes: venues can design and change their own drink menus.
- Illuminated delivery: four lit pickup spots and colour light sequences on the bar.
- Model range: Toni for luxury venues, Compatto for high-traffic areas, Veloce for clubs.
3. Potential application
Integrated resorts and casinos in Vietnam could install Toni as a signature bar. Airport lounges and duty-free areas could offer robot-made cocktails and mocktails to transit passengers. Event venues and rooftop bars in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi could use the robot to speed up service during peak nights.
4. Benefits
Toni serves more than 80 drinks per hour with consistent recipes, easing queues at peak times. Two arms reaching 158 bottles allow a broad cocktail and mocktail menu without extra bar staff. The robot's choreography and lighting draw crowds, turning the bar into a marketing asset. Built in Italy and patented, with D&AD and Core77 design awards.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Hospitality and entertainment venues are investing in experiential service to attract visitors while coping with bartender shortages. Robotic bars have spread to airports, casinos and cruise ships. Vietnam's integrated resorts, casinos in Phu Quoc and Van Don, and premium nightlife in major cities are natural targets for attention-grabbing beverage automation.
