1. Technology overview
Heimdall Power was founded in Norway in 2016 and has headquarters in Oslo and Charlotte, North Carolina. It sells grid monitoring and dynamic line rating (DLR) technology so that transmission and distribution operators can rate lines on real-time conditions instead of conservative static limits, unlocking capacity on existing lines.
The Neuron is a self-powered sensor installed on live high-voltage lines by an autonomous drone in about 10 seconds; it measures current, conductor temperature, sag, ice, line movement and local weather and communicates over satellite, NB-IoT or LTE-M. Virtual Neurons are software sensors trained on Neuron data that model lines from asset data, weather and local topography following CIGRE, IEEE and FERC 881 methods. The Heimdall Platform combines both for real-time capacity, ice and wildfire views and AI ampacity forecasts, integrating with SCADA via API. Customers include EirGrid, Bayernwerk, Elvia, Swissgrid and Great River Energy.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Neuron sensor: self-powered line sensor measuring current, temperature, sag, ice and movement.
- Drone installation: autonomous drone mounts sensors on live lines in about 10 seconds.
- Virtual Neuron: machine-learning software sensors following CIGRE, IEEE and FERC 881 methods.
- AI forecasting: forecasts ampacity and conductor temperature for operational planning.
- Hazard detection: views for ice, line movement, heat and wildfire risk.
- Flexible hosting: cloud-native with on-premises or private cloud options and SCADA integration.
3. Potential application
The national transmission company could pilot dynamic line rating on congested 220 kV and 500 kV corridors that carry solar and wind power from central provinces. Distribution companies could monitor lines in typhoon-prone areas for movement and sag. Renewable developers could use DLR studies to support faster connection with fewer curtailment hours.
4. Benefits
Real-time dynamic line rating delivers average capacity gains of more than 40% on existing lines, deferring costly new construction. Faster connection of renewables and new loads becomes possible without waiting for grid reinforcement. Drone installation on live lines avoids outages, and real-time data with AI forecasts helps operators re-route load and detect ice, heat and smoke risks.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Transmission congestion is delaying renewable and data center connections worldwide, and grid-enhancing technologies such as dynamic line rating are being promoted as a fast, low-cost way to add capacity. In Vietnam, curtailment of solar and wind due to transmission limits in central and southern regions makes better use of existing lines a practical priority.
