1. Technology overview
Rank is a Spanish company whose founders began research on Organic Rankine Cycles in 2007 and established the business in 2010, with its manufacturing and development plant in the Valencian Community. It helps industrial users recover low-grade heat to cut primary energy use and carbon emissions, and since 2020 it has added high-temperature heat pumps to its ORC range.
The Rank HTHP takes heat sources at 25 to 125 C and uses electricity to raise them to as much as 150 C, at about 500 kW thermal per unit, in water-to-water or water-to-steam versions, while also producing useful cooling. It uses non-toxic, non-flammable working fluids and comes as a compact plug-and-play unit, enclosure or container, including a container with steam generation. Rank ORC modules convert heat at 90 to 170 C into electricity and useful heat for self-consumption, at up to about 1,000 kW thermal. The company has commercial agreements in Colombia, Korea, the UK, Poland, Germany and India.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- High-temperature heat pump: lifts heat sources of 25 to 125 C to as much as 150 C.
- Steam option: water-to-steam version supplies process steam from waste heat.
- Simultaneous cooling: produces useful cooling alongside heat.
- Safe working fluids: non-toxic, non-explosive and non-flammable fluids.
- Flexible packaging: basic, enclosure, container and container with steam generation.
- ORC power modules: convert 90 to 170 C waste heat into electricity and useful heat.
3. Potential application
Food and beverage plants in Vietnam could use the HTHP to make process steam while supplying chilled water. Ceramic, glass and metal works could convert flue gas or cooling water heat into electricity with ORC modules. Biogas and biomass plants could add ORC units to raise power output from exhaust heat.
4. Benefits
Rank publishes combined heating and cooling COP values for the HTHP ranging from about 3.7 to 12.8 at 150 C output, depending on source temperature, and up to 15.9 at lower outputs. One unit can deliver process heat and cooling at the same time, so plants use one machine for two loads. ORC modules turn heat that would be rejected into on-site electricity, and container options shorten installation.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Industrial plants waste large amounts of heat below 170 C, and both heat pumps and ORC systems are gaining ground as ways to reuse it as steam, hot water or electricity. Vietnam's ceramics, glass, cement, steel, food and chemical sectors have exhaust and cooling water heat that could be recovered as energy prices and emission reporting duties rise.
6. Other information
Rank was founded in 2010 after ORC research that began in 2007, and has offered high-temperature heat pumps since 2020. Its plant is in the Valencian Community, Spain. It has commercial collaboration agreements in Colombia, Korea, the UK, Poland, Germany and India, and in 2025 to 2026 it joined the Stream Step and Recitherm projects, hosted Honeywell and other visitors and shipped its first ORC to Korea.
