1. Technology overview
Huayou Cobalt is a Chinese lithium battery materials and cobalt group founded in 2002, headquartered in Tongxiang, with operations in China, Indonesia, Africa and Hungary. Its recycling segment, run through Zhejiang Huayou Recycling Technology, closes the loop of its battery industrial chain by treating retired power batteries as an urban mine.
The segment covers material remanufacturing, power battery and pack remanufacturing, cascade utilization and scrapping. Retired EV batteries are repurposed into products for forklifts, AGVs, two- and three-wheelers, low-speed and special vehicles, commercial, industrial and residential storage, and telecom base station backup. Batteries that cannot be reused are processed to recover lithium carbonate, cobalt and nickel for precursors and cathode materials.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Cascade utilization: retired EV batteries repurposed for lower-demand applications.
- Mobility battery products: packs for forklifts, AGVs, two-wheelers and three-wheelers.
- Storage products: commercial, industrial and residential storage plus telecom backup power.
- Battery remanufacturing: rebuilding of power batteries and battery packs.
- Material recovery: lithium carbonate, cobalt and nickel recovered for new cathode materials.
- Integrated chain: links to Huayou's precursor, cathode and Indonesian nickel operations.
3. Potential application
Electric motorbike makers in Vietnam can partner on take-back and reuse of retired packs. Telecom operators can use second-life lithium packs for base station backup. Battery cell and pack plants in Vietnam can route scrap to an integrated recycler with nearby Indonesian capacity.
4. Benefits
Battery owners get both second-life products and material recovery from one group, so retired packs are used as long as possible before recycling. Recovered metals feed Huayou's own precursor and cathode production, giving a stable offtake route. The group's Indonesian nickel base and its new Indonesian recycling cooperation with Hyundai bring capacity closer to Southeast Asian EV and battery plants.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Southeast Asia is building an EV battery supply chain around Indonesian nickel, and automakers there are signing recycling partnerships for production scrap and end-of-life packs. Vietnam's very large electric two-wheeler market and its telecom and warehouse sectors are natural users of second-life lithium packs that replace lead-acid batteries.
6. Other information
Founded in 2002; headquarters in Tongxiang, Zhejiang, with more than 35,000 employees and over 700 valid authorised patents. Operates nickel projects in Indonesia, including the Huayue HPAL project and Weda Bay industrial park. In March 2026 its subsidiary Zhejiang Huayou Recycling Technology signed a battery recycling cooperation agreement with Hyundai Motor Group for Indonesia.
