1. Technology overview
AeroShield Materials is a materials science company based in Waltham, Massachusetts, spun out of MIT and founded by one of the material's inventors. It develops and scales transparent silica aerogels that are more than 95% air, aimed at making window glass much more insulating.
The aerogel is bonded to glass and supplied to window and door makers for insulated glass units, targeting better-than-triple-pane performance in a double-pane unit. In March 2025 the company produced full-size entry-door glass (22 x 64 inch) using a 25-ton critical point dryer at its Waltham plant, and works with ODL on doors and with Alpen on retrofit window inserts.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Ultra-clear aerogel: transparent silica aerogel described as more than 95% air.
- Glass bonding: aerogel is laminated to glass for use in insulated glass units.
- Door-size panels: full-size 22 x 64 inch doorglass produced with a 25-ton critical point dryer.
- Retrofit use: tested in Alpen Winsert window inserts with infrared thermography by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
- Certification path: ODL tests hundreds of units to support NFRC certification.
3. Potential application
High-end glazing for office towers and hotels seeking lower cooling loads. Insulating glass units for premium residential windows and doors. Retrofit window inserts for existing buildings where frames cannot be replaced.
4. Benefits
Company-reported insulation about twice that of the inert gases used in insulated glass. Potential savings of up to 20% on annual heating and cooling bills. Retrofit inserts can improve performance without added thickness or weight. Transparent glazing keeps daylight and views.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Building energy codes and cooling loads are pushing demand for high-performance glazing. In Vietnam and Southeast Asia, air-conditioning demand makes glass heat gain a significant cost, and premium glazing suppliers may look for insulating components; AeroShield's products are US-focused so far.
6. Other information
Headquartered in Waltham, MA, spun out of MIT; CEO Dr. Elise Strobach. Press releases list a 14.5M USD ARPA-E award, a new manufacturing facility with 5M USD additional funding, and a seed fundraise. ODL prototypes expected commercially available by end of 2026.
