1. Technology overview
XGS Energy develops a proprietary solid-state geothermal system and has offices in Houston, Texas and Palo Alto, California. It describes the goal as clean, round-the-clock energy wherever there is hot rock, decoupling geothermal from water and geology.
The smallest unit is a single well with a pipe-in-pipe heat exchanger in a closed loop where water is recycled. Thermally conductive materials added in the well boost heat transfer, so performance does not depend on rock permeability or porosity. In September 2026 XGS was selected by the US Department of Energy to lead a drilling project in New Mexico with partners Baker Hughes, New Mexico Tech and Sandia National Laboratories.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Solid-state geothermal: pipe-in-pipe heat exchanger in a closed loop.
- Materials-boosted wells: thermally conductive materials increase heat delivery.
- Water independence: water is recycled, not consumed.
- Geology independence: no reliance on permeability or porosity.
- Modular scaling: the smallest unit is a single well.
3. Potential application
Technology evaluation with geothermal developers in Indonesia and the Philippines. Firm power for industrial parks or data centres in ASEAN. Feasibility studies on hot-rock sites in Vietnam.
4. Benefits
Closed-loop design recycles water, easing water constraints.
Performance is independent of rock permeability or porosity, widening usable sites.
Modular, starting from a single well.
Round-the-clock output suited to firm clean power needs.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Next-generation geothermal is drawing government and investor support as a firm clean power source. Indonesia and the Philippines have large geothermal resources, and closed-loop designs may open sites that conventional projects cannot use. Vietnam is exploring geothermal potential with limited conventional resources.
