1. Technology overview
Sonair is a robotics sensing company based in Oslo, Norway. It builds on 25 years of research at SINTEF and two decades of MEMS development to make ADAR, an acoustic detection and ranging technology that gives robots 3D ultrasonic awareness for safety.
ADAR One is a safety-certified 3D ultrasonic sensor that detects people and obstacles on autonomous robots or protects static machine work cells. It is rated SIL 2 and PL d, with a range of up to 4 m, a 180 by 180 degree field of view, 128 configurable safety zones and power use below 5 W. Customers named on the site include beRobox and Cleanfix, and more than 50 companies have tested the technology.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- 3D ultrasonic sensing: ADAR detects people and obstacles using acoustic detection and ranging.
- Safety rating: ADAR One is rated SIL 2 and PL d.
- Wide coverage: 180 by 180 degree field of view and a sensing range of up to 4 m.
- Configurable zones: 128 safety zones can be set for each application.
- Fast response: 112 ms response time with plus or minus 2 cm range precision.
- Flexible mounting: use on autonomous mobile robots, robot arms or static machine work cells.
3. Potential application
Warehouse and logistics operators in Vietnam can fit ADAR One on AMRs for people detection in shared aisles. Packaging and palletizing line builders can use it to guard robot work cells without physical fences.
4. Benefits
Safety certification to SIL 2 and PL d supports compliant robot designs. A 180 by 180 degree field of view with 128 configurable zones covers wide areas with one sensor. Range precision of plus or minus 2 cm and response time of 112 ms are stated. Power consumption below 5 W suits mobile robots.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Autonomous mobile robots and collaborative machines need certified, low-power safety sensing that works where cameras and lidar struggle. Vietnamese and ASEAN factories and warehouses are adopting AMRs and palletizers, creating demand for safety sensors on these machines.
6. Other information
Gullhaug Torg 2D, 0484 Oslo, Norway. First commercial product launch in June 2025 and first robots shipped with ADAR in March 2026, per the site FAQ. ADAR won the LogiMAT Best Product Award 2026.
