1. Technology overview
Sun-Ice Energy is a thermal energy storage company founded in Singapore in November 2021 and backed by ATEQ Group. Its founder Jacques Mouchet is also president of ATEQ Group. The idea came from the European energy crisis, when high electricity prices forced ice rinks to close, and early prototypes showed that solar-powered thermal storage could deliver cooling without grid power.
The products are PCM Thermal Energy Storage units (wall column, window and ceiling) and an ICE WALL unit, which store energy in phase change material and release it on demand as cooling or heating. PCM units give about 670 to 1,075 W nominal cooling with 1.73 to 3.75 kWh storage each, pair with a room controller with plus or minus 0.5 degC regulation, and connect to standard chilled water networks or fan coil units.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- PCM storage units: Wall column, window and ceiling units that can be daisy-chained to room size.
- ICE WALL unit: Water-based PCM freezing at 0 degC with 5.76 to 34.56 kWh storage.
- Room controller: Regulation within plus or minus 0.5 degC.
- HVAC integration: Connects to 7 degC chilled water networks, chillers and fan coil units.
- Humidity control: Automatic humidity control prevents mould and condensation.
- Smart monitoring: Real-time energy monitoring and control.
3. Potential application
Resorts and villas in Vietnam could cool rooms with rooftop solar and no grid dependence. Factories and commercial buildings could lower peak electricity demand. Server rooms and cold storage could add thermal buffering to existing chilled water systems.
4. Benefits
Company statements cite up to 60% peak load reduction and up to 100% lower cooling energy use when paired with solar. Cooling can continue for 24 hours without grid power. The PCM is stated to be non-toxic, non-flammable and recyclable, and removes indoor refrigerant leak risk. A 50-year service life and lifetime cost of about one-twentieth of comparable lithium-ion storage are claimed.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Cooling demand is rising fast in tropical Southeast Asia, and buildings, cold storage and data rooms drive peak electricity use. Thermal storage is a lower-cost alternative to batteries for shifting cooling load, and refrigerant regulation adds interest in systems without indoor refrigerants.
6. Other information
Founded November 2021 in Singapore; backed by ATEQ Group. Milestones on the site: first off-grid container in Singapore (January 2023), first off-grid villa in Bali (December 2023), first building in Shanghai (November 2025), an 18-villa project in Bali about half built (December 2025). Certifications listed on the site include LEED Platinum and a Nearly Zero Energy Building certificate.
