1. Technology overview
SPEC Toolbox is a construction engineering platform headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, according to Wood Central. It began as CLT Toolbox, founded by Adam Jones and Ringo Thomas, and now covers a wider range of manufactured construction materials. In January 2026 it announced an additional US$3 million round.
The web platform lets structural engineers run CLT, glulam, connection and related checks using supplier product data and supported design standards: NDS, Eurocode 5, AS 1720.1 and CSA O86. An AI feature called SPEC Intelligence assists design work. The free tier is sponsored by more than 40 manufacturing partners, and a Pro plan adds team seats and PDF customisation.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Mass timber calculators: CLT, glulam, dowels and bolts, screws, brackets, ribbed deck, stud walls, timber-concrete composite and acoustics.
- Design codes: NDS, Eurocode 5, AS 1720.1 and CSA O86.
- Supplier data: Product catalogs from partners such as Simpson Strong-Tie, Rothoblaas and Binderholz.
- SPEC Intelligence: An AI feature that assists design checks.
- PDF reports: Customisable reports, with more options in the Pro plan.
- Team plan: Pro adds team seats, autosolve and database view.
3. Potential application
A structural engineering consultancy in Vietnam could check CLT floor panels for a low-rise project. A developer pursuing green certification could compare timber options early in design. A timber product supplier could publish products in the catalogue for specifiers.
4. Benefits
The core calculators, supplier catalogs and PDF reports are free for structural engineers. Design checks use manufacturer product data, which shortens specification of timber systems. Multiple design codes are supported, and the page cites more than 6,000 engineers as users.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Low-carbon construction materials such as mass timber are gaining attention, but design and specification effort slows adoption. In Vietnam and Southeast Asia, developers pursuing green building certification and embodied carbon reduction may look at engineered timber for selected building types.
6. Other information
Additional US$3 million announced 19 January 2026 per Wood Central, with earlier rounds of US$1.5 million seed (October 2023) and US$1 million bridge (2024). Investors include Black Nova, Investible, Archangel, Giant Leap and Ecotone. Supports AS 1720.1 for Australia and New Zealand. Rebranded from CLT Toolbox.
