1. Technology overview
Vexlum is a Finnish photonics company in Tampere, a spin-off from the Optoelectronics Research Centre at Tampere University. It develops VECSEL lasers (Vertical External Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers) for quantum technology, medicine and the semiconductor industry.
The lasers combine semiconductor and optically pumped external-cavity disk laser features, giving high-power, low-noise, single-frequency output across visible and near-infrared wavelengths. Vexlum vertically integrates III-V chip fabrication by molecular beam epitaxy through to final laser systems, and is described as a major supplier for trapped-ion quantum computers.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- VECSEL technology: semiconductor gain chip in an optically pumped external cavity.
- Single-frequency output: low-noise operation for precision work.
- Broad wavelengths: visible and near-infrared coverage.
- In-house III-V chips: molecular beam epitaxy fabrication in Tampere.
- Target markets: quantum computing, semiconductor metrology, atomic clocks and space.
3. Potential application
Research labs in Vietnam working on quantum optics or spectroscopy can use the lasers as light sources. Makers of semiconductor inspection and metrology equipment can integrate them into instruments.
4. Benefits
High-power, low-noise, single-frequency output suits precision applications such as quantum computing. Wide wavelength coverage in the visible and near infrared lets one technology serve several uses. Vertical integration from chip to laser system gives control over supply and quality.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Quantum computing, semiconductor metrology and satellite optical links need stable narrow-linewidth lasers, and suppliers are scaling from lab to industrial production. Vietnamese universities and metrology or inspection equipment makers could source such lasers through distributors.
6. Other information
