1. Technology overview
Vitrealab GmbH is a photonics company at Gutheil-Schoder-Gasse 17, Vienna, Austria, and a spin-off of the University of Vienna. It develops light engines for AR glasses to overcome limits in brightness, size and power.
Its Laser-LCoS light engine is built on the proprietary Quantum Light Chip (QLC), a laser-based photonic integrated circuit that produces intense, collimated light and shapes coherent laser light. Vitrealab designs and manufactures the devices in-house using direct laser writing, and is moving from advanced prototypes to industrial-grade solutions.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Quantum Light Chip: laser-based photonic integrated circuit for collimated light.
- Laser-LCoS light engine: engine for AR glasses and VR headsets.
- Coherence-artifact-free imaging: image quality without speckle-type artifacts.
- In-house manufacturing: devices made by direct laser writing.
- Compact design: small size aimed at mass-market AR glasses.
3. Potential application
AR and smart glasses OEMs can evaluate the light engine for next-generation devices. Industrial AR headset makers for training and maintenance can use bright, daylight-readable displays.
4. Benefits
Claimed benefits are high brightness for daylight use, battery life above one day, image quality without coherence artifacts, small size and low cost for the mass market. The chip enables wider field of view and lower power than conventional approaches. In-house fabrication supports prototyping toward industrial scale.
5. Market trends & opportunities
AR glasses need small, bright and efficient display engines to reach consumers. Vietnamese and ASEAN electronics assemblers and AR device brands would engage mainly as OEM partners or through technology licensing.
