1. Technology overview
ARK Inc. is a Japanese land-based aquaculture company established in December 2020 and headquartered in Hiratsuka, Kanagawa, with offices in Osaka and Okinawa, ARK Worldwide in London and ARK Asia Pacific in Cyberjaya, Malaysia. It aims to make closed-system seafood farming accessible to new entrants such as construction firms, manufacturers, universities and local governments.
ARK ZERO MATRIX is a packaged modular recirculating aquaculture system with two grow-out tanks and one life support system unit on about 60 square metres. It provides mechanical filtration, biofiltration, denitrification and ozone sterilisation, runs as full RAS on freshwater or partial RAS with seawater intake, and uses insulated tanks and automatic feeders. The STARBOARD by ARK app monitors temperature and dissolved oxygen with alerts, schedules feeding and manages multiple units across locations. Species include grouper, whiteleg shrimp and kuruma prawn.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Packaged module: two grow-out tanks plus one life support system tank in about 60 square metres.
- Water treatment: mechanical filtration, biofiltration, denitrification and ozone sterilisation.
- Flexible operation: full RAS with freshwater or partial RAS with seawater intake.
- STARBOARD by ARK app: temperature and dissolved oxygen monitoring with alerts.
- Multi-site control: centralised management and scheduled feeding across units and locations.
- Species know-how: grouper, whiteleg shrimp, kuruma prawn, sea urchin and other species.
3. Potential application
- Grouper and shrimp hatcheries or nurseries adopting modular RAS for biosecure production.
- Industrial or real estate companies diversifying into land-based seafood near cities.
- Universities and provincial agencies running pilot RAS units for training and research.
4. Benefits
- Lets new entrants start land-based farming on about 60 square metres and scale by adding modules.
- Reduces labour with automatic feeders, scheduled operations and remote monitoring.
- Limits disease and environmental risk through closed recirculation with ozone sterilisation.
- Retains heat with insulated tanks and lids, lowering heating needs once water is warmed.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Land-based recirculating systems are spreading as coastal farming faces disease, pollution and climate risk, and as investors from outside fisheries enter seafood production. In Vietnam and Southeast Asia, grouper and shrimp producers are testing RAS to secure biosecurity and year-round output close to cities.
6. Other information
ARK Inc. was established in December 2020 in Hiratsuka, Japan, and is led by CEO Yosuke Kurihara. In September 2026 it raised about USD 8.5 million in Series A equity and loans led by UntroD Capital Japan, Beyond Next Ventures and BP Capital, with Resona Bank as lead lender. It plans initial projects in the UAE and Indonesia. It also produces seafood through its own and joint farms.
