1. Technology overview
BatX Energies is a battery materials company founded in 2020 in Gurugram, India, by Utkarsh Singh and Vikrant Singh. It recovers battery-grade critical minerals from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries to reduce India's reliance on imported lithium, cobalt and nickel.
BatX runs physical recycling infrastructure in a hub-and-spoke model: collection spokes feed HUB-1 in Sikandrabad, Uttar Pradesh, opened in 2024 with capacity to process up to 5,100 tonnes of batteries a year. Batteries are discharged, dismantled and mechanically processed into black mass, then refined by low-temperature, low-pressure hydrometallurgy into lithium carbonate, cobalt, nickel and manganese sulphates. The process handles NMC, LFP and mixed chemistries, and serves OEMs, fleets, aggregators and cathode makers.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Collection network: spoke facilities and partner points feed batteries under documented chain of custody.
- Safe pre-processing: discharge, dismantling and mechanical processing into black mass.
- Hydrometallurgical refining: low-temperature, low-pressure recovery of critical minerals.
- Product range: lithium carbonate plus cobalt, nickel and manganese sulphates and industrial sodium sulphate.
- Chemistry agnostic: NMC, LFP and mixed chemistries on one platform.
- EPR compliance: authorised collection, recycling and documentation for producers and importers.
3. Potential application
Vietnamese recyclers can partner on hydrometallurgical refining technology for black mass. Battery pack and cathode material producers can source recycled lithium carbonate and sulphates. EV makers can use the model as a template for take-back and EPR programmes.
4. Benefits
The company reports a 97 to 99 percent recovery rate for lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese. OEMs and fleets get a compliant, traceable destination for end-of-life batteries with EPR documentation. Cathode and cell makers can buy recycled battery-grade materials with certificates of analysis, diversifying supply away from virgin mining.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Battery recycling is moving from black mass export to local refining as countries seek supply security for lithium, nickel and cobalt. Vietnam's growing electric two-wheeler and car fleet and its EPR framework for batteries create a need for refining capacity and technology partners able to handle LFP as well as NMC chemistries.
6. Other information
Founded in 2020 in Gurugram, Haryana. HUB-1 in Sikandrabad was inaugurated in 2024 with support from India's Technology Development Board.
