1. Technology overview
BigRep is a Berlin based manufacturer of large-format fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printers founded in 2014, with a US arm, BigRep Americas. It helps manufacturers print full-size prototypes, jigs, fixtures, moulds and end-use parts in one piece instead of outsourcing machining or assembling many small printed sections.
The range covers professional machines (STUDIO with 250 litres and ONE with about 1,000 litres of build volume) and production systems: the enclosed PRO, the VIIO 250, the high-temperature IPSO 105 and ALTRA 280, and the new ALTRA 670 with a 670 litre chamber heated to 140 °C and dual 450 °C extruders. Features include automated bed and extruder calibration, Relay Mode for continuous printing across extruders, quality-controlled filaments, the DRYCON filament dryer and workflow software with training. Customers span automotive, aerospace, rail, defence, energy and education, including Ford, Etihad Airways Engineering, Koehler Group and SFM Technology.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- One-cubic-metre printing: ONE and PRO print parts up to about 1,000 litres in a single piece.
- High-temperature production: IPSO 105, ALTRA 280 and ALTRA 670 use heated chambers and 450 °C extruders.
- Relay Mode: printing continues on a second extruder when a spool runs out for long unattended jobs.
- Automated calibration: bed and extruder calibration plus adaptive mesh levelling reduce setup work.
- Materials and drying: quality-controlled filaments, third-party materials and the DRYCON dryer.
- Workflow software and training: tools cover the process from design to analytics.
3. Potential application
Automotive and motorbike plants in Vietnam can print full-size assembly fixtures and check gauges in-house. Furniture and consumer goods makers can print large prototypes and casting or thermoforming moulds. Shipyards and rail maintenance depots can produce large replacement covers and ducts on demand.
4. Benefits
BigRep printers produce parts up to about one cubic metre in a single print, avoiding the cost and lead time of outsourced machining for large tooling and prototypes. A Ford Engineering Europe manager is quoted saying the printer paid for itself after two to three successful prints. The fifth-generation ONE is reported to boost production by 40%, and production machines with heated chambers and 450 °C extruders print high-performance materials for functional parts.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Manufacturers are bringing large tooling, fixtures and prototypes in-house with large-format 3D printing to cut lead times and dependence on machining suppliers, while high-temperature materials expand use into functional parts. In Southeast Asia, automotive, furniture, rail and marine producers face pressure for faster product development, increasing interest in printing large parts locally.
6. Other information
Founded in 2014; BigRep GmbH is registered in Berlin, Germany (Gneisenaustraße 66). Former parent BigRep SE listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in July 2024 (ticker B1GR); in September 2026 BigRep SE in voluntary liquidation completed the sale of BigRep GmbH, and in October 2026 the company announced its return to private ownership after 45% revenue growth. Acquired HAGE3D in 2023. Recent resellers include get3D (Poland), 3DXTECH (USA) and Alfex CNC (Australia).
