1. Technology overview
Crate.io AG develops CrateDB, an open-source distributed SQL database for real-time analytics on high-volume, high-cardinality operational data. Founded in Dornbirn, Austria, the company moved its headquarters to the United States in 2016 and in October 2026 returned to Europe under a new holding company in Vaduz, Liechtenstein. Its users are mainly in manufacturing, energy, logistics and critical infrastructure.
CrateDB stores time-series, JSON documents, full-text, vectors, geospatial and relational data in one engine and queries them with standard SQL, including joins and window functions, without pre-aggregation. Data is queryable as soon as it arrives, with columnar storage, automatic sharding, replication and failover. It is available as CrateDB Cloud, including a managed option on STACKIT in European data centers, as self-managed Enterprise or Apache 2.0 open source, and at the edge. Customers include ABB, TGW Logistics, Bitmovin, NBCUniversal, Alpla and Rauch.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Multi-model SQL: Time-series, JSON, full-text, vector, geospatial and relational data in one engine.
- Real-time ingestion: Data is queryable immediately after arrival at millions of events per second.
- Search and vectors: Lucene-based full-text search with BM25 and KNN vector search in SQL.
- Distributed by design: Automatic sharding, replication, failover and horizontal scale-out.
- Open interfaces: PostgreSQL wire protocol, REST endpoint and connectors for Kafka, Spark and dbt.
- Flexible deployment: CrateDB Cloud, STACKIT in Europe, self-managed, edge and open source.
3. Potential application
An electronics or automotive parts plant in Vietnam can collect machine and quality sensor data into CrateDB for real-time OEE dashboards. A logistics operator can track hundreds of thousands of sensors and conveyor events in its distribution centers, as TGW Logistics does. A solar or wind farm operator can analyze inverter and turbine telemetry at the edge.
4. Benefits
Industrial and logistics companies can analyze sensor and machine data as it arrives, with the site citing ingestion of 1 million values per second and lookups across 60 million rows in under a second. One SQL engine replaces separate time-series, search and vector stores, so existing SQL skills and tools such as Grafana and Tableau can be reused. The Apache 2.0 open-source core and free cloud start without a credit card lower entry cost.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Smart factories, warehouses and energy grids generate continuous sensor streams that must be analyzed in real time alongside business data and, increasingly, AI search. Manufacturers also want databases that can run on-premises or at the edge for latency and data sovereignty reasons. As Vietnam attracts more electronics, automotive and logistics investment, plants and distribution centers need this kind of operational analytics.
