1. Technology overview
Felix Instruments – Applied Food Science was founded in 2012 in Camas, Washington, building on 25 years of plant science research at CID Bio-Science. It makes portable, non-destructive instruments that let growers, packers and researchers judge produce maturity and quality in the field instead of cutting and drying fruit in a laboratory.
The F-750 Produce Quality Meter uses near-infrared spectroscopy with a Carl Zeiss MMS-1 spectrometer (310-1100 nm) to estimate dry matter, Brix, titratable acidity and internal colour in about 8-12 seconds, with user-built models for specific varieties and regions. The F-751 line packages ready calibrations for avocado, grape, kiwifruit, mango and melon. A gas analysis line (F-900, F-920, F-940, F-950, F-960) measures ethylene, oxygen and carbon dioxide for storage, packaging and ripening rooms.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- F-750 Produce Quality Meter: handheld NIR meter for dry matter, Brix, titratable acidity and colour.
- F-751 single-commodity meters: ready models for avocado, grape, kiwifruit, mango and melon.
- Custom model building: software to create predictive models, including machine learning models.
- Data handling: SD card storage with transfer by WiFi, USB or card.
- Gas analyzers: F-900 ethylene analyzer and F-920, F-940, F-950, F-960 for headspace, storage and ripening.
- Field-ready design: aluminium body, swappable lithium-ion batteries and 0-50 degree C operating range.
3. Potential application
- Mango and avocado exporters in Vietnam checking dry matter before harvest and at packhouses.
- Fruit research institutes building local NIR models for tropical varieties.
- Ripening and cold storage operators monitoring ethylene and CO2 in rooms.
4. Benefits
- Non-destructive testing: measures internal quality without cutting fruit, so more samples can be checked.
- Better harvest timing: dry matter and Brix data guide when to pick for export maturity.
- Fast results: each scan takes about 8-12 seconds, with 1,600+ measurements per charge.
- Local calibration: users build models for their own varieties and growing regions.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Fruit importers increasingly set minimum dry matter and Brix levels to guarantee eating quality, and exporters need fast proof of maturity at harvest and packing. Southeast Asian exporters of mango, avocado and other tropical fruit, including Vietnam's growing fruit export sector, can use portable NIR meters to reduce immature shipments and rejections.
