1. Technology overview
GreatAsic Technology is a Malaysian fabless custom chip design company headquartered in Bayan Lepas, Penang, with R&D in Puchong, Selangor. It was founded by Ong Chin Hu and Michael Liew Woon Chin, both formerly at Intel, Marvell and StarFive, to give system companies their own silicon for data centre, edge AI and automotive products.
Its offering spans turnkey SoC platforms, front-end design, physical design, design for testability, FPGA prototyping and emulation, signal and power integrity, IP cores proven in silicon, embedded software and NPI engineering, with hardware and software co-designed. The team reports multiple full-mask tape-outs and high-volume production, and in 2026 it became one of the first Malaysian firms to receive both Arm Flexible Access and Arm Neoverse Compute Subsystems.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- SoC platform: turnkey system-on-chip solutions for data centre, edge AI and automotive.
- Front-end and physical design: RTL through physical implementation of custom ASICs.
- Design for testability: DFT planning and insertion for production test.
- FPGA prototyping and emulation: early validation of designs and software.
- SI/PI analysis: signal integrity and power integrity engineering.
- IP and software: silicon-proven IP cores, embedded software and NPI engineering.
3. Potential application
A Vietnamese camera or edge AI device maker can commission a custom AI SoC. A Vietnamese automotive electronics supplier can co-develop a control ASIC. A Vietnamese design centre can partner on FPGA prototyping, DFT or physical design for Arm-based projects.
4. Benefits
System companies can obtain a custom ASIC or AI SoC from one partner covering architecture, implementation, software and production ramp. Hardware and software co-design aligns the chip with the target workload. Access to Arm Flexible Access and Neoverse Compute Subsystems shortens development of Arm-based server and edge chips. Founders bring experience from Intel, Marvell, Broadcom and StarFive.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Cloud providers, AI device makers and automakers increasingly commission custom silicon to improve performance per watt. Malaysia's RM1.1 billion programme with Arm and Vietnam's semiconductor strategy are both pushing Southeast Asia from assembly toward chip design, creating demand for regional ASIC partners.
6. Other information
Headquartered in Bayan Lepas, Penang, with an office in Puchong, Selangor. Raised a US$6.9 million Pre-Series A in June 2026 led by Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia & India, with Ehsan Kapital and Gobi Partners (Khazanah Dana Impak-backed fund). Approved in May 2026 for Arm Flexible Access and Arm Neoverse CSS under Malaysia's Arm partnership.
One platform connecting startups, corporations, research institutions, regions and investors
