1. Technology overview
Hydroleap is a greentech company with offices at the Singapore Water Exchange and in Mount Waverley, Australia, founded by Dr. Mohammad Sherafatmand. It replaces chemical-intensive steps in industrial wastewater treatment with electrochemistry, so that plants use less coagulant and biocide and produce fewer harmful by-products.
Its HL-EC electro-coagulation reactor applies a current to aluminium or iron electrodes, releasing metal ions that form flocs with suspended solids, heavy metals, oils and dyes, which are then removed by flotation or settling. The HL-EO electro-oxidation reactor generates hydroxyl radicals, free chlorine and sulphate radicals that break down recalcitrant organics, COD, nitrate and microorganisms, and HL-EO-CT applies the same principle to cooling tower water. Units are automated, modular skids of 1 to 10 m3/hr for food and beverage, palm oil, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, textile and data centre operators.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- HL-EC electro-coagulation: electrodes release metal ions that coagulate suspended solids, heavy metals, organics and dyes.
- HL-EO electro-oxidation: direct current generates hydroxyl radicals, free chlorine and sulphate radicals to mineralise recalcitrant organics.
- HL-EO-CT for cooling towers: electrochemical control of scale and microorganisms in cooling water.
- Modular skids: standard modules of 1-10 m3/hr that can be combined for larger flows.
- Full automation: automated operation with minimal operator intervention and low maintenance.
- Industry coverage: configurations for palm oil, food and beverage, semiconductor, pharmaceutical, textile and data centre effluents.
3. Potential application
Food processing and seafood plants in Vietnam can use HL-EC to cut oil, grease and TSS before biological treatment. Textile and dyeing mills can add HL-EO for colour and COD removal. Data centres and electronics factories in northern industrial parks can apply HL-EO-CT to reduce biocide use in cooling towers.
4. Benefits
Electro-coagulation achieves nearly 95% oil and grease reduction, up to 90% TSS removal and 60-80% COD and BOD reduction, according to the product page. Treatment runs without added coagulant chemicals and with shorter retention times than conventional processes. Modular 1-10 m3/hr units with power use of about 0.3-3 kWh/m3 scale with demand and need little maintenance.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Factories and data centres in Southeast Asia are under pressure to cut chemical use, reuse water and meet stricter effluent limits, including emerging rules on PFAS. Compact electrochemical units suit sites with limited space and fit the shift towards automated, decentralised treatment in fast-growing semiconductor and data centre clusters.
