1. Technology overview
Hygenco Green Energies Private Limited is an Indian developer of green hydrogen and green ammonia projects with offices in Gurugram and Pune. It helps industrial users replace fossil-based hydrogen and fuels without having to invest in or operate electrolysis plants themselves, with a mission to develop 10 GW of production and distribution assets by 2030.
Under a Design-Build-Finance-Own-Operate model, Hygenco builds renewable-powered electrolysis plants at or near the customer site, owns and runs them, and customers pay per unit of gas delivered under long-term offtake contracts. Plants combine solar or wind power with electrolysers and deliver hydrogen and oxygen by pipeline. Target segments include steel, fertilisers, refineries, chemicals, glass, food and pharma, gas blending, mobility and grid storage. Named customers are Jindal Stainless and Sterlite Technologies.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- DBFOO delivery: design, build, finance, own and operate in one contract.
- Gas-as-a-service: customers pay only per unit of hydrogen or ammonia delivered.
- On-site production: renewable-powered electrolysis at or near the customer plant.
- Pipeline supply: continuous delivery of green hydrogen and green oxygen to furnaces.
- Long-term offtake: fixed-price contracts of up to 20 years with transfer options.
- Green ammonia projects: larger-scale ammonia production for industry and export.
3. Potential application
Stainless steel and glass makers in Vietnam that use hydrogen in annealing or furnaces could switch to on-site green hydrogen under a per-unit contract. Optical fibre and electronics factories could source green hydrogen and oxygen by pipeline. Fertiliser producers could study green ammonia supply without building their own electrolysis plants.
4. Benefits
Industrial customers avoid upfront capital spending because Hygenco designs, finances, owns and operates the plant and charges per unit of gas. Long-term fixed-price offtake, such as the 20-year contract at Jindal Stainless, gives price stability and continuous 24-hour pipeline supply. The Steel One plant is expected to cut about 2,700 tonnes of CO2 per year, and Photon Leap targets about a 30% reduction in emissions at the STL plant.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Heavy industries face customer and regulatory pressure to cut emissions but often lack capital and expertise to run hydrogen plants, which favours service models priced per unit of gas. Vietnam's 2024 hydrogen strategy and export-oriented steel, glass and electronics manufacturers seeking lower-carbon inputs create similar demand in Southeast Asia.
6. Other information
Offices in Gurugram, Haryana, and Pune, Maharashtra; co-founded by Amit Bansal, Anshul Gupta and Aashish Gupta. Projects include the Heartland demonstration plant commissioned in March 2022, Steel One for Jindal Stainless launched in February 2024 with up to 250 t/yr capacity, and Photon Leap for Sterlite Technologies launched in 2025. In August 2024 it signed an MoU with Mitsubishi Power on hydrogen- or ammonia-fired gas turbine plants. Founding year is not stated on the website.
