1. Technology overview
Inficold India was founded in 2015 by Dr. Nitin Goel and Dr. Himanshu Pokharna, both IIT Bombay graduates, and is based in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh. It designs energy-efficient refrigeration for perishable products in places where grid power is weak or costly, aiming to cut post-harvest losses of fruit, vegetables, milk and fish at farm and village level.
Its core thermal energy storage stores cooling in phase change materials such as water-to-ice, so cold rooms and chillers can run on solar power, shift peak loads and keep cooling through power cuts. The range includes solar cold storage at 1 to 20 degrees Celsius, cold rooms, ripening, pre-cooling and mushroom chambers, blast freezers, heat pump dehydrators, bulk milk coolers from 250 to 5,000 litres, instant milk chillers and insulated PUF and PIR panels, serving dairy, horticulture, fisheries, meat, food processing and pharma.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Thermal energy storage: phase change materials store cooling for stable temperature and outage backup.
- Solar cold storage: off-grid or hybrid cold rooms holding 1 to 20 degrees Celsius.
- Bulk milk coolers: 250 to 5,000 litre units for village milk collection centres.
- Instant milk chillers: chill milk at collection to protect quality before transport.
- Specialised chambers: ripening, pre-cooling, mushroom growing, seed germination and blast freezing.
- Insulation and controls: PUF and PIR panels, cold room doors and smart controls.
3. Potential application
- Fruit cooperatives in the Mekong Delta and Central Highlands storing produce at the farm gate before sale.
- Dairy farms and milk collection points chilling milk immediately in areas with frequent power cuts.
- Fishery and seafood collectors holding catch in solar cold rooms on islands and coastal villages.
4. Benefits
- Cooling during outages: stored cold keeps produce and milk at temperature when grid power fails.
- Lower energy cost: solar operation and peak-load shifting reduce electricity and diesel use.
- Less post-harvest loss: storage at the farm gate lets growers hold produce instead of selling at distress prices.
- Proven scale: the company reports 1,000+ clients, installations in 15+ countries and 24+ Indian states.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Post-harvest losses of up to 40% for perishables in South and Southeast Asia are driven largely by missing cold storage near farms. Decentralised solar cold rooms and milk chillers are supported by development agencies and state programmes, and the approach suits rural areas with unreliable power, including fruit, vegetable and dairy regions of Vietnam.
6. Other information
Founded in 2015; registered in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh. Holds 8 patents and received India's National Technology Award 2019 from the Department of Science and Technology. Over 100 employees, a network of 20+ dealers, and installations in 15+ countries including Kenya. Listed on the FAO Science, Technology and Innovation Portal in 2025.
