1. Technology overview
Medusa is an open-source commerce company founded in 2021 in Copenhagen by Nicklas Gellner, Oliver Juhl and Sebastian Rindom. It grew out of an agency project for a client that had to scale from two to fifty markets, and it targets brands and retailers whose needs do not fit rigid SaaS e-commerce platforms.
Medusa is a headless, modular platform released under the MIT licence. Modules cover products, orders, payments, customers, promotions, pricing, taxes, inventory with multiple warehouses, multi-region currencies and multiple sales channels, plus an admin dashboard. A workflow framework with retries and rollback allows custom data models, APIs and UI extensions, and an agent harness with MCP, CLI and skills supports AI-built customisations. Medusa Cloud hosts projects with push-to-deploy and auto-scaling; marketplace builds can start from the Mercur multi-vendor template. Users include Eight Sleep, Heineken and Mitsubishi Motors.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Commerce modules: Covers products, orders, payments, promotions, pricing, taxes and customers.
- Multi-region and multi-warehouse: Handles currencies, tax rules, sales channels and stock across locations.
- Workflow framework: Lets developers add custom data models, APIs and admin extensions with retries and rollback.
- Agent harness: Provides MCP, CLI, skills and previews for AI coding agents.
- Medusa Cloud: Hosts projects with GitHub deployment, auto-scaling, preview environments and built-in caching.
- Marketplace template: Supports multi-vendor marketplaces through the Mercur starter.
3. Potential application
A Vietnamese retail chain can build a custom omnichannel backend that links its stores, app and marketplaces without per-order platform fees. A software house can use Medusa as the core for e-commerce projects delivered to local clients. A distributor can launch a B2B ordering portal or multi-vendor marketplace with custom pricing rules.
4. Benefits
Businesses own and can change every part of their commerce stack, from checkout to pricing rules, without platform lock-in. There is no licence fee or GMV-based charge; costs are infrastructure only, with Medusa Cloud plans from 29 USD per month. Multi-region, multi-warehouse and multi-channel modules support expansion into new markets. The built-in cache layer is reported to make core commerce APIs 2.2 times faster.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Mid-size and large brands are moving from monolithic e-commerce suites to composable, headless stacks so they can run custom checkouts, B2B flows and marketplaces. AI coding agents are lowering the cost of customising open-source commerce code, and agentic shopping channels are emerging. In Vietnam and Southeast Asia, software firms and retailers building their own commerce systems can use open-source cores instead of licensing costly proprietary platforms.
