1. Technology overview
Melodea develops water-based barrier coatings for flexible packaging, serving packaging manufacturers and brand owners in the consumer goods industry. Its coatings are designed as plastic-free, PFAS-free and BPA-free alternatives to EVOH, AlOx and aluminium foil, which make flexible packs hard to recycle.
MelOx NGen provides an ultra-high oxygen barrier and VBseal a high water vapour barrier, applied to paper or to mono-material plastic films. Melodea also offers MeloPack, ready-to-fill packaging produced by its in-house converter in four structures: paper with MelOx NGen and VBseal, retortable easy-peel BOPP, MDOPE with LDPE, and easy-peel PET. Target applications include dry powders, coffee and nuts, dairy and butter, snacks and pet food, ready meals and tea, as well as pharmaceutical and cosmetic packaging.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- MelOx NGen: water-based coating giving an ultra-high oxygen barrier.
- VBseal: coating that provides a high water vapour barrier and sealing.
- Paper solutions: recyclable, repulpable barrier paper replacing aluminium laminates.
- Plastic solutions: mono-material BOPP, MDOPE and PET structures with high barrier.
- MeloPack: ready-to-fill pouches and films from an in-house converter.
- Testing and development center: barrier testing and trials for brand projects.
3. Potential application
Vietnamese coffee, cashew and pepper exporters can switch from aluminium laminates to recyclable high-barrier paper or mono-material pouches for EU buyers. Flexible packaging converters can license or source barrier coatings for their own lines. Snack and pet food producers can test mono-material structures to meet retailer recyclability requirements.
4. Benefits
Brands can replace aluminium foil and multi-material laminates with mono-material paper or plastic that the company describes as 100% recyclable, with the paper version repulpable. MeloPack is presented as food-contact approved and ready for the EU PPWR deadline of August 2026. Ready-to-fill packs have a lead time of about 30 days, and plastic structures are priced from 6 EUR per kg.
5. Market trends & opportunities
The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation and PFAS restrictions are forcing food and consumer goods exporters to redesign multi-layer flexible packs for recyclability. Asian converters supplying European brands, including in Vietnam, need high-barrier mono-material solutions that run on existing coating and lamination lines.
