1. Technology overview
Pessl Instruments, operating under the METOS brand, is an agricultural monitoring company headquartered in Weiz, Austria, that has been turning field information into decisions for growers since 1984. It supplies weather stations, dataloggers and sensors together with cloud software for weather monitoring and forecasts, disease models, insect monitoring, irrigation and nutrition management and yield prediction.
METOS 5 is a modular weather and soil station measuring rainfall, temperature, humidity, soil moisture and temperature and, depending on the variant, leaf wetness, radiation and wind, with dew point, VPD, Delta T and ET0 calculated. It connects over CatM1 and NB-IoT as standard, with optional 4G, NTN satellite, LoRaWAN or WiFi, logs data every 15 minutes and sends it hourly to FieldClimate Cloud, where growers, agronomists and agribusinesses analyse data and access APIs.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Modular sensors: rainfall, air temperature, humidity, soil moisture, soil temperature, leaf wetness, radiation and wind.
- Derived indices: dew point, VPD, Delta T and ET0 measured or calculated.
- Connectivity: CatM1 and NB-IoT standard, with optional 4G, NTN, LoRaWAN or WiFi.
- Solar power: 1.5 W solar panel with rechargeable 6 V battery and IP67 housing.
- FieldClimate Cloud: remote configuration, 15-minute logging and hourly data upload.
- Agronomic models: disease models, insect monitoring with iSCOUT, irrigation and yield prediction tools.
3. Potential application
- Tea and coffee growing areas in Thai Nguyen or the Central Highlands deploying station networks for disease warnings.
- Durian and mango exporters using leaf wetness and disease models to time spraying and meet residue limits.
- Agri-input companies and extension centres integrating station data into advisory apps via API.
4. Benefits
- Field-level weather and soil data support timely irrigation, spraying and harvest decisions.
- Disease and insect models help reduce unnecessary crop protection applications.
- Low-power solar design and internal memory keep data flowing at remote sites during network outages.
- Open APIs and partner integrations let agribusinesses feed station data into their own platforms.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Precision agriculture in Southeast Asia increasingly relies on dense networks of low-cost connected weather stations to manage climate risk, irrigation and disease pressure. NB-IoT and LTE-M networks rolled out by Vietnamese telecom operators make cellular IoT stations practical, while exporters of coffee, tea and fruit need documented, data-driven crop protection.
