1. Technology overview
Nernst Electric is an Irish company based in Bray, near Dublin, developing on-site oxygen generators for fish farms and other industries. Fish farms normally buy trucked liquid oxygen or run on-site pressure swing adsorption units, which can be costly at remote sites.
Its generators use oxygen transport membrane technology with ceramic membranes that separate oxygen from ambient air, and a 3D-printing process aims to make the ceramics more affordable. The company lists aquaculture, water treatment, mining and steel as target sectors and runs a pilot project.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- OTM technology: Oxygen transport membrane separates oxygen from air.
- High purity: Electrolyte ensures 100% oxygen selectivity.
- Scalable output: From under 1 kg to over 100 tons of oxygen per day.
- Low maintenance: No moving parts.
- Low-cost materials: Built from abundant, affordable materials.
3. Potential application
Intensive shrimp farms and hatcheries in the Mekong Delta can evaluate on-site oxygen supply for high-density ponds. Pangasius processors with farming arms can assess lower oxygen costs. Wastewater treatment plants can use oxygen for aeration.
4. Benefits
On-site generation reduces reliance on oxygen deliveries at remote farms. The units have no moving parts, which keeps maintenance minimal. The site states efficiency below 200 kWh per ton of oxygen is possible, and capacity scales from under 1 kg to over 100 tons per day.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Intensive fish and shrimp farming depends on dissolved oxygen, and energy and logistics costs push farms toward on-site supply. In Vietnam, high-density shrimp and pangasius ponds already rely on aeration and oxygenation, creating a possible market for lower-cost oxygen generation.
