1. Technology overview
NorcSi GmbH was founded in 2020 and is based at the Weinberg Campus in Halle (Saale), Germany. The company develops silicon anode materials to raise the energy density of lithium-ion batteries, where conventional graphite anodes limit capacity.
The patented platform produces 100% silicon anodes in a roll-to-roll process. The anodes are described as suitable for lithium-ion, lithium-sulfur and solid-state cells and are aimed at electric cars, portable electronics, drones and multicopters. A 400 mm roll-to-roll line is under construction in Halle, with production planned from 2026 for battery and automotive manufacturers.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- 100% silicon anode: patented anode material made entirely of silicon.
- Roll-to-roll production: continuous manufacturing on a 400 mm line under construction in Halle.
- Expansion control: proprietary materials and process controls manage silicon swelling during charging.
- Multi-chemistry: suited to lithium-ion, lithium-sulfur and solid-state batteries.
- Drop-in integration: works within existing cell production processes.
3. Potential application
Battery cell makers in Vietnam and ASEAN could evaluate the anode for high-energy cells in e-mobility. Drone and UAV manufacturers could test it for longer flight time. Research labs could trial it in solid-state cell prototypes.
4. Benefits
Silicon can offer more than twice the theoretical capacity of graphite, according to the company. The anode fits existing cell production, which limits retooling for cell makers. It is usable across several cell chemistries, including solid-state. A European supply source reduces dependence on imported anode materials.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Demand for higher energy density in EVs, drones and portable devices drives interest in silicon anodes as a graphite complement. In Vietnam and Southeast Asia, growing EV and battery assembly activity creates demand for advanced anode inputs, mostly through imports.
