1. Technology overview
OpenEPCIS is an open-core implementation of the GS1 EPCIS standard maintained by benelog GmbH & Co. KG, based in Cologne, Germany. It gives companies and software vendors a standards-based way to capture, store and share traceability events such as shipping, receiving and transformation without building their own event infrastructure.
The EPCIS 2.0 Repository Community Edition is built on Quarkus, Kafka and OpenSearch and runs with Docker Compose, exposing the EPCIS 2.0 REST capture and query interfaces. Around it, the openepcis GitHub organisation publishes tools for XML and JSON-LD conversion, event hash generation, EPC to GS1 Digital Link translation and validation. A paid Business Edition, listed on the GS1 Germany PINE marketplace, adds integration and operating support.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- EPCIS 2.0 repository: Events are captured and queried through standard REST interfaces.
- Scalable stack: Quarkus, Kafka and OpenSearch handle event storage and search.
- Format converter: Event documents are converted between XML and JSON-LD.
- Event hash generator: Canonical hashes identify events for integrity checks.
- Digital Link tools: EPC identifiers are translated to GS1 Digital Link URIs.
- Validation: Event data is checked against the EPCIS and CBV standards.
3. Potential application
Vietnamese traceability software vendors can use OpenEPCIS as a standards-compliant event backend. Seafood and fruit exporters can share EPCIS events with US and EU importers. System integrators can prototype digital product passport data flows at low cost.
4. Benefits
Free, Apache 2.0 licensed components let integrators start EPCIS projects without licence costs. Native EPCIS 2.0 and GS1 Digital Link support improves interoperability with retailers, regulators and partners. Conversion and validation tools reduce errors when exchanging event data. A commercial edition provides a path to supported production use.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Regulations such as the US FSMA 204 rule, pharmaceutical serialization and EU digital product passports are converging on GS1 identifiers and event data exchange. Vietnam's traceability standards reference GS1-compatible coding, so local software vendors need standard event infrastructure to connect with export partners.
6. Other information
Maintained by benelog GmbH & Co. KG, Cologne, Germany. The openepcis GitHub organisation hosts more than 30 repositories. Community components are licensed under Apache 2.0, and both open-source and Business Edition offerings are listed on GS1 Germany's PINE marketplace.
