1. Technology overview
ParadeDB, Inc. is based in New York and released the first version of ParadeDB in late 2023. It addresses the common pattern of copying Postgres data into Elasticsearch to get search, which adds pipelines, consistency problems and extra infrastructure.
ParadeDB adds BM25 full-text search, vector search, filters, facets and joins directly to Postgres through the pg_search extension, built on a custom index. Search runs in SQL inside Postgres transactions and indexes update with writes. It can be installed on self-hosted Postgres, deployed on Kubernetes via CloudNativePG, run alongside an existing managed Postgres through logical replication, or used as ParadeDB Cloud or BYOC. Users include Alibaba Cloud, Bilt Rewards, Modern Treasury and Terrapin Finance.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- pg_search extension: BM25 full-text search inside Postgres with a custom index.
- Hybrid search: combines text search with vector search and reranking in SQL.
- Facets and aggregates: fast filters, facets, Top K and COUNT queries for search pages and dashboards.
- Logical replication mode: runs next to an existing managed Postgres primary.
- Enterprise edition: physical replication for HA, failover and read replicas.
- Many deployment paths: Cloud, BYOC, Kubernetes via CloudNativePG, Render, Railway and other PaaS.
3. Potential application
- Vietnamese e-commerce and marketplace apps adding product search with facets on Postgres.
- Fintech and banking platforms searching transactions, bonds or customer records in real time.
- SaaS products offering in-app document and ticket search with hybrid ranking.
4. Benefits
- Removes the need for a separate Elasticsearch cluster and sync pipeline.
- Terrapin Finance cut bond search latency 25x and Bilt reduced Postgres query timeouts by 95%.
- Search results stay transactionally consistent with application data.
- Free AGPL-3.0 Community edition, with Enterprise high availability when needed.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Postgres has become the default database for new applications, and teams increasingly want search, vectors and analytics in the same database to cut operational overhead. Vietnamese startups and SaaS companies that standardise on Postgres can add product and document search without running a separate search cluster.
