1. Technology overview
Pix4D is a Swiss photogrammetry and drone mapping software company founded in 2011 in Lausanne. Its product line turns drone and satellite imagery into maps and 3D models for surveying, construction, public safety and agriculture.
PIX4Dfields is its hybrid drone and satellite mapping software for crop analysis and precision agriculture. It processes imagery offline on a laptop in minutes, producing orthomosaics, vegetation index maps, zonation maps and digital surface models, and an AI Magic tool detects weeds and anomalies to build spot-spraying and variable-rate prescription maps. Field boundaries, obstacles and prescriptions can be exported directly to spray drones from DJI, XAG, TopXGun, EAVision, ABZ Innovation and Hylio, or as ISOXML to ISOBUS terminals and John Deere Operations Center, so growers and drone service providers can plan targeted spraying before flying.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Offline processing: orthomosaics, vegetation indices, zonation and DSM generated on Windows or macOS.
- Magic tool: AI model detects weeds, anomalies and objects in RGB and multispectral data.
- Targeted operations: spot-spraying and variable-rate prescription maps for liquids and fertilizer.
- Spray drone export: boundary and VRA missions for DJI, XAG, TopXGun, EAVision, ABZ and Hylio drones.
- Machinery integration: ISOXML export for ISOBUS terminals and John Deere Operations Center.
- Satellite and basemap layers: Vantor high-resolution imagery and editable basemap boundaries.
3. Potential application
- Drone spraying service teams in the Mekong Delta planning boundaries and obstacles before flying DJI or XAG sprayers.
- Durian, coffee and pepper exporters using weed and stress maps to limit chemical use for residue compliance.
- Large rice and sugar cane farms creating variable-rate fertilizer maps from multispectral imagery.
4. Benefits
- Results in minutes in the field thanks to offline, on-device processing without internet access.
- Spot-spraying and variable-rate prescriptions apply chemicals and fertilizer only where needed.
- One planning tool works across many spray drone brands and ISOBUS machinery, avoiding vendor lock-in.
- Satellite imagery at 30–70 cm resolution complements drone flights for scouting large areas.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Spray drone fleets are growing quickly in Asia and the Americas, and the value is shifting from flying to deciding where and how much to spray. Prescription maps from drone or satellite imagery allow spot spraying and variable-rate fertilization, which cut input costs and support residue and sustainability requirements for export crops.
6. Other information
Pix4D was founded in 2011 in Lausanne, Switzerland, as a spin-off of EPFL. PIX4Dfields is available in 11 languages with a free trial; recent releases added TopXGun support (2.10, July 2025), EAVision boundary export (2.11, December 2025), EAVision variable-rate and ABZ support (2.12, January 2026) and Hylio mission export (2.13, June 2026).
