1. Technology overview
EyRIS is a Singapore company co-founded by clinicians and computer scientists from the Singapore National Eye Centre, Singapore Eye Research Institute and the NUS School of Computing. It tackles the gap between growing numbers of diabetic patients and the limited capacity of eye specialists to grade retinal photographs.
SELENA+ is a deep learning system based on convolutional neural networks that reads retinal photographs and flags referable diabetic retinopathy, possible glaucoma suspect and age-related macular degeneration. It was validated by 30 co-investigators on nearly 500,000 retinal images, including 10 external multi-ethnic datasets. It is used by ministries of health, hospitals and screening programmes, with camera partners such as Topcon and Optomed.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Diabetic retinopathy detection: identifies referable diabetic retinopathy on retinal photographs.
- Glaucoma suspect: flags possible glaucoma suspects for specialist review.
- Macular degeneration: detects signs of age-related macular degeneration.
- Large validation base: tested on nearly 500,000 retinal images and 10 external multi-ethnic datasets.
- Camera partnerships: works with fundus camera makers including Topcon Healthcare and Optomed.
- Programme support: secondary grading training and knowledge transfer for national screening teams.
3. Potential application
Endocrinology departments and diabetes clinics in Vietnam could screen every patient's retina during routine visits. Provincial health departments could run community diabetic eye screening with fundus cameras at commune health stations. Eye hospital chains and optical retailers could add AI retinal checks to their service packages.
4. Benefits
Automates first-pass grading of retinal photographs so specialists only review referable cases. Screens for three sight-threatening conditions in one pass instead of separate exams. Gives immediate assessment at the point of capture, which shortens the time from screening to referral. Is already used in national diabetic retinopathy programmes in Oman and Brunei, lowering the risk for new adopters.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Diabetes prevalence is rising quickly across Southeast Asia, and annual eye screening is recommended for every diabetic patient, far exceeding available ophthalmologists. Governments in Brunei and Oman are building national AI-assisted screening programmes, a model that suits Vietnam's push to manage chronic diseases at primary care level.
