1. Technology overview
SPACECOOL INC. is a climate tech startup founded in April 2021 with its registered office in Tokyo and an R&D laboratory in Kyoto. It develops a radiative cooling material that lowers surface temperatures below the ambient air with zero energy, targeting heat stress and air-conditioning demand on buildings, outdoor equipment and temporary facilities.
The material uses a multilayer optical structure that reflects about 95% of solar radiation and emits about 95% in the 8-13 micrometre atmospheric window, sending heat to outer space. It is supplied as film, magnet sheet, tarpaulin and architectural membrane, used on roofs, cubicle switchboards, shipping containers, tents and truck covers. Customers include automakers, railway, energy and electronics companies in Japan.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Multilayer optical design: reflects about 95% of sunlight and emits about 95% in the atmospheric window.
- Film: flexible optical film for roofs, walls, equipment and vehicles.
- Magnet sheet: removable cooling sheet for switchboards and containers.
- Tarpaulin: cooling canvas for sunshades, tents and truck covers.
- Architectural membrane: membrane material for large structures such as pavilions.
- Building compliance: non-combustible approvals NM-5897 and NM-5898 and ICC-ES report ESR-5703.
3. Potential application
Power and telecom companies in Vietnam can apply magnet sheets or film to outdoor switchboards to reduce internal temperature. Logistics firms can use the tarpaulin on trucks and containers carrying heat-sensitive goods. Construction sites and event organisers can use cooling tents to reduce heat stress for workers and visitors.
4. Benefits
In summer the material keeps surfaces 2-6°C below outdoor air temperature with a cooling capacity of 70-100 W/m², without electricity. The film is designed for long-term outdoor weather resistance and can be applied to many existing surfaces. It holds Japanese non-combustible material approvals and an ICC-ES evaluation report for Class A roof assemblies, easing use in buildings.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Extreme heat is becoming a workplace safety and energy cost issue across Asia, and governments are promoting heat adaptation alongside carbon reduction. Tropical Southeast Asian markets such as Thailand and Vietnam have many metal-roofed factories, outdoor electrical cabinets and logistics fleets that can benefit from zero-energy cooling surfaces.
