1. Technology overview
Starship Technologies was founded in 2014 by Skype co-founders Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis. It runs autonomous sidewalk delivery for grocery retailers, food delivery platforms and industrial sites, with a US contact address in San Francisco, core engineering and AI development in Estonia, and operating entities in Estonia, the UK, Finland, Germany and Sweden.
Its robots are about 99% autonomous at Level 4, using radars, cameras, sensors and machine learning to identify objects, cross roads and reach customers. Retailers and platforms such as Bolt, Uber Eats, Wolt, Just Eat, foodora, Co-op, REWE and S Group plug robots into their ordering flows, and the robots double as advertising space through wraps and sampling. The fleet exceeds 3,000 robots across more than 300 locations in eight countries.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Level 4 autonomy: robots drive themselves about 99% of the time.
- Sensor fusion: radars, cameras, sensors and machine learning detect objects and cross roads.
- Platform integration: works with delivery apps and grocery chains inside their ordering flows.
- Industrial sites: robots move goods across large corporate and industrial campuses.
- Advertising media: robot wraps, digital messaging and product sampling for brands.
- Fleet scale: 3,000+ robots across 300+ locations in eight countries.
3. Potential application
Supermarket chains in Vietnam could pilot robot delivery inside large new townships with internal sidewalks. Food delivery platforms could use robots for short-distance orders in closed residential compounds. Industrial park operators could move documents and parts between factories on site.
4. Benefits
Average store-to-customer delivery takes about 15 minutes. Starship's CEO says robot grocery deliveries cost US$3-4 less than traditional courier fulfilment. In Finland, robots helped reach about 20% grocery delivery penetration with S Group, which completed one million robot deliveries. Electric robots avoided over 650 tonnes of CO2 in European operations.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Grocery and food delivery volumes keep rising while courier costs and rider shortages squeeze margins. Robot delivery is moving from campuses into city grocery and restaurant delivery. Dense urban neighbourhoods, new townships and industrial parks in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, alongside fast-growing quick-commerce, are potential future markets as regulations for sidewalk robots develop.
6. Other information
Founded in 2014 by Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis; Ahti Heinla is CEO. Raised a US$50 million Series C in October 2025 led by Plural, bringing total funding above US$280 million. Passed 10 million deliveries in April 2026 and is winding down US university campus operations.
