1. Technology overview
Tan90 Thermal Solutions is an Indian cold chain company founded in 2019 in a tin shed in Chennai, with its registered office in Chennai and a corporate headquarters in Bangalore opened in 2025. It targets the spoilage and energy cost of moving perishable food, dairy and medicines through fragmented cold chains that depend on diesel reefers and ice.
The company develops proprietary phase change materials (PCM) that absorb heat passively and hold a set temperature for days, with grades from 80 down to minus 24 degrees Celsius. These are built into shipper boxes, blow-moulded and rotomoulded ice boxes, thermal panels, PCM packs, insulated and last-mile delivery bags and blast freezers, serving dairy, ice cream, frozen fish, fresh-cut produce and quick commerce. A Cooling as a Service model launched in Bangalore in 2023 and was live in eight cities in 2024.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- PCM range: phase change materials from 80 down to minus 24 degrees Celsius for different products.
- Shipper boxes and ice boxes: blow-moulded and rotomoulded containers for cold chain shipping.
- Thermal panels: keep fresh-cut produce at 2 to 4 degrees Celsius for up to 72 hours.
- PCM packs: 50 ml to 200 ml sachets for parcels and small consignments.
- Delivery bags: insulated and last-mile bags for quick commerce and food delivery.
- Cooling as a Service: cold capacity offered as a service, live in eight Indian cities.
3. Potential application
- Vietnamese dairy and ice-cream distributors delivering to small retailers without refrigerated trucks.
- Online grocery and quick-commerce platforms in Ho Chi Minh City keeping chilled and frozen orders cold on motorbike delivery.
- Seafood and fresh-cut produce suppliers in the Mekong Delta shipping to city kitchens.
4. Benefits
- Less spoilage: Tan90 cites up to 30% lower spoilage and 50% longer shelf life for cut produce.
- Stable temperature without power: PCM is claimed to hold plus or minus 1 degree Celsius for 96 hours or more.
- Lower energy and emissions: passive cooling reduces reliance on diesel reefers and ice.
- Flexible cost: Cooling as a Service lets operators pay for cold capacity instead of buying assets.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Quick commerce, online grocery and dairy distribution are growing fast in South and Southeast Asia, while much of the cold chain still relies on ice and diesel units, causing high post-harvest and last-mile losses. Passive PCM cooling and pay-per-use cold capacity are gaining interest as low-energy alternatives for hot climates.
6. Other information
