1. Technology overview
Atera Water is a Singapore-based water start-up co-founded by CEO Dr. Adrian Yeo and COO Tai Kee. It works at the meeting point of material science and membrane engineering, aiming to make filtration membranes affordable enough for utilities and factories in emerging markets where surface water is getting dirtier and chemical treatment is costly.
Its Clarity hollow-fibre ultrafiltration membranes are made by melt-stretching a polyolefin matrix embedded with high-strength nanoparticles, a solvent-free process that creates asymmetric slit pores below 0.1 micron. The membranes remove 99.9% of solids and microorganisms. TeraStream, the submerged series, treats high-turbidity river and surface water in one step without chemical pre-treatment, using a proprietary operating regime to cope with heavy solids loads. TeraSep, the pressurised series, targets industrial wastewater recycling. Users include water utilities, industrial estates and textile manufacturers.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Clarity membranes: polyolefin hollow fibres with embedded nanoparticles and asymmetric slit pores below 0.1 micron.
- Solvent-free manufacturing: melt-stretching process that uses no solvent or water.
- TeraStream submerged series: one-step treatment of high-turbidity surface water without chemical pre-treatment.
- High solids tolerance: proprietary operating regime handles over 15 times conventional solids loading and swings in feed quality.
- TeraSep pressurised series: ultrafiltration for industrial wastewater recycling.
- High removal and strength: 99.9% removal of solids and microorganisms with high tensile strength and chemical resistance.
3. Potential application
Provincial water supply companies in the Mekong Delta can upgrade river water plants with TeraStream to handle high turbidity without more chemicals. Textile and dyeing factories can recycle process water with TeraSep. Industrial park operators can add ultrafiltration as a reuse stage after their central wastewater plants.
4. Benefits
TeraStream handles more than 15 times the solids loading of conventional approaches and needs no chemical pre-treatment, which the company says cuts chemical and sludge costs by 80%. Lifecycle costs are claimed to be over 45% lower, with a smaller footprint and simpler process flow than coagulation and sand filtration. The solvent-free membrane manufacturing avoids toxic wastewater, and a 100,000 m3/day plant is estimated to avoid about 10,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Rivers in Southeast Asia are becoming more turbid and polluted with climate change and urban growth, and many small and medium water plants in Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia still rely on chemical coagulation and sand filters. Affordable, chemical-free membranes made in the region are gaining attention from utilities and industrial parks that need to upgrade quality and recycle water.
6. Other information
Singapore-based; co-founded by Dr. Adrian Yeo (CEO) and Tai Kee (COO). Joined Imagine H2O Asia Cohort 5 in 2024 and was named to the 2025 APAC Cleantech 25 by Cleantech Group and ADB Ventures. In 2025 it signed an MOU with CA Water in Vietnam, received an Imagine H2O pilot grant for river water treatment in Vietnam, piloted TeraStream with Maxim Textile in Malaysia and deployed TeraSep at PT SIER in Indonesia.
