1. Technology overview
TmaxTibero Co., Ltd. is based at TmaxSoft Tower in Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea, and adopted the Tibero brand identity in 2025 for its database business. It develops enterprise database software positioned as a lower-cost alternative to Oracle for mission-critical systems in finance, government, manufacturing and telecom, and claims more than 1,500 customer organizations.
Tibero 7 is a relational DBMS compatible with Oracle SQL, PL/SQL, packages and triggers, so applications can migrate with minimal changes. Tibero Active Cluster (TAC) provides active-active shared-disk clustering as an alternative to Oracle RAC, with single, TAC and HA architectures on-premises, in private or public clouds and across multi-cloud. The portfolio also includes ADR and ProSync replication, SysMasterDB monitoring, the OwlDB DBaaS, OpenSQL and the TDA database appliance. Customers include POSCO, Incheon Airport, K-water, Korean ministries and Indonesia's Directorate General of Taxes.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Oracle compatibility: Supports Oracle SQL, PL/SQL, packages and triggers for low-effort migration.
- Tibero Active Cluster: Active-active shared-disk clustering as an alternative to Oracle RAC.
- Performance features: Parallel processing, partitioning, compression and an in-memory column store.
- Security: Transparent Data Encryption, granular access control and auditing.
- Replication and DR: ADR and ProSync for real-time replication and standby clusters.
- Flexible deployment: Runs on-premises, on cloud marketplaces, on Nutanix HCI or as the TDA appliance.
3. Potential application
A Vietnamese government agency can migrate a large Oracle-based tax, customs or social insurance system to Tibero with TAC clustering and a DR site. A bank or insurer can move back-office Oracle applications with minimal code changes to reduce license costs. A manufacturer can run its ERP database on Tibero in a private cloud, as POSCO does for its subsidiaries.
4. Benefits
Organizations can reduce Oracle licensing costs while keeping existing SQL and PL/SQL code, as Indonesia's tax authority did when the Coretax project team assessed Tibero as 99 percent compatible with Oracle. TAC clustering targets up to 99.99 percent availability and allows zero-downtime patching node by node. The same database scales from a single instance to multi-node clusters, with Coretax growing to a 200 TB, 7-node production cluster plus a disaster recovery site.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Rising Oracle license and support costs, together with data sovereignty concerns, are leading governments and large enterprises in Asia to evaluate compatible alternative databases. Indonesia's national tax system running on Tibero shows that Southeast Asian public-sector projects are open to non-US database vendors for mission-critical workloads.
