1. Technology overview
Weenat is a French agro-weather data company created in 2014, which launched its first connected tensiometer with a mobile app in 2015. It helps farmers, cooperatives, traders and agro-industry anticipate weather risks and save water by optimising irrigation, and has expanded across Europe with subsidiaries in Spain and Germany.
For irrigation, Weenat offers three probe types: a tensiometric probe measuring soil water potential and temperature at several depths, a capacitive probe measuring volumetric water content every 10 cm (30 cm or 60 cm versions) and a fertigation probe that adds pore water electrical conductivity. The Weenat app converts readings into a usable water reservoir in millimetres, applies predefined or custom soil thresholds and sends alerts by SMS, email or notification. A range of 11 French-made sensors, a weather API with 40+ parameters and 150 agronomic indicators complete the offer.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Tensiometric probe: real-time soil water potential and soil temperature at several depths.
- Capacitive probe: volumetric water content every 10 cm in 30 cm or 60 cm versions.
- Fertigation probe: water content, pore water conductivity and soil temperature.
- Usable water reservoir: converts kPa readings into millimetres of water available to crops.
- Thresholds and alerts: predefined or custom soil thresholds with SMS, email and app alerts.
- Weather API: 40+ weather parameters and 150 agronomic indicators for other platforms.
3. Potential application
- Coffee and fruit cooperatives deploying soil probes across members' farms to time dry-season irrigation.
- Greenhouse and substrate growers using fertigation probes to manage EC and nutrient supply.
- Agri-input and insurance companies integrating weather and agronomic indicators through the API.
4. Benefits
- Shows plant-available water in millimetres so farmers know when to start or stop irrigating.
- Custom threshold alerts help avoid both water stress and waterlogging.
- Fertigation probe data helps deliver the right mix of water and nutrients and reduce nutrient costs.
- Field-level and territory-level data support cooperatives and agro-industry decisions.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Droughts and water restrictions are making soil moisture monitoring a standard input for irrigation decisions, and cooperatives increasingly buy sensor networks and weather data at territory scale. In Vietnam, drought and saline intrusion in the Mekong Delta and Central Highlands create demand for reliable soil water data in fruit, coffee and vegetable production.
6. Other information
Weenat was created in 2014 by president Jérôme Le Roy. It acquired Weather Measures in 2021, opened subsidiaries in Spain and Germany in 2021 and acquired the French irrigation management company CoRHIZE in 2024. It reports 40,000 sensors, 40,000 users, 70 staff, 360+ partners and a presence in 15 countries.
