1. Technology overview
Malayan Cement Berhad (MCB) is the Malaysian operation of the YTL Cement Group, with a legacy of more than 70 years, five integrated cement plants, four grinding plants, over 50 ready-mixed concrete batching plants, drymix plants, quarries and an R&D facility called the Construction Development Lab. The group also operates Fico-YTL in Vietnam and YTL Cement Singapore. It addresses the high embodied carbon of cement and concrete.
ECOCem is its range of low-carbon cement alternatives that contain at least 25% and up to 40% recycled materials, giving 20% to 50% lower carbon intensity than CEM I Portland cement. Variants include Castle, Wallcem, Phoenix, Walcrete, Top Standard, MASCRETE ECO, Slagcem, Quickcast and the new ECOCem Prime CEM II/A-L 52.5N. It sits within an ECO range with ECOConcrete, ECOSand and low-VOC ECODrymix. Customers are contractors, precasters, ready-mix producers, architects, engineers and infrastructure owners.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Recycled content: every ECOCem product contains at least 25% recycled material.
- Lower carbon: carbon intensity 20% to 50% below CEM I Portland cement.
- ECOCem Prime: CEM II/A-L 52.5N cement certified under SIRIM eco-labelling.
- Application variants: masonry, slag, precast, low-heat and general-purpose grades such as Wallcem, Slagcem and Quickcast.
- ECO ecosystem: ECOConcrete, ECOSand engineered sand and low-VOC ECODrymix mortars.
- Green certifications: SIRIM Eco-Label, Singapore Green Label and Singapore Green Building Product.
3. Potential application
Vietnamese contractors building metro, bridge and highway projects can use slag-blended low-carbon cement for durable infrastructure. Precast manufacturers can switch to recycled-content cement to offer lower-carbon components. Developers seeking LOTUS or Green Mark ratings can specify eco-labelled cement and mortars.
4. Benefits
ECOCem cuts carbon intensity by 20% to 50% compared with CEM I Portland cement, and ECOConcrete lowers embodied carbon by 20% to 60%. Using 25% to 40% recycled material diverts industrial waste from landfill. SIRIM Eco-Label, Singapore Green Label and Singapore Green Building Product certifications support green building credits. Each ECOCem plant has an ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory for quality control.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Governments and developers in Southeast Asia are adopting green procurement and building rating schemes that reward lower embodied carbon. In Vietnam, net zero 2050 commitments and the construction sector's green materials targets are increasing demand for blended cements with recycled content and recognised regional eco-labels.
6. Other information
