1. Technology overview
Yuma Energy is a battery-as-a-service company in India, launched in 2023 as a joint venture between Yulu Bikes Pvt. Ltd. and Magna International. It aims to remove range anxiety and high battery costs for electric two- and three-wheelers by giving riders and fleets on-demand access to charged batteries through a dense swapping network.
The stack combines IoT-connected lithium-ion batteries with a BMS that tracks temperature, voltage and current, modular charging units with 4, 9 or 12 slots that run in assisted or self-service mode, a vehicle dock for OEM integration and a rider app for finding, reserving and paying for swaps. AI and machine learning balance battery availability across stations, and a partner app gives franchisees performance and revenue dashboards. Customers are electric two- and three-wheeler makers such as Kinetic, delivery and logistics fleets, and property owners who host stations as franchise partners.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Smart swappable battery: IoT-enabled lithium-ion pack certified to UN 38.3, UL 2271/2272 and AIS 156.
- Modular charging units: 4, 9 or 12 slots with integrated cooling and RFID or BLE access.
- Vehicle dock: standard battery dock that two- and three-wheeler OEMs build into vehicles.
- Rider app: locate stations, reserve a battery in advance and pay in a single tap.
- AI network optimisation: balances battery stock across stations for high availability.
- Partner app: dashboards for franchisees to track station performance and revenue.
3. Potential application
Vietnamese electric motorbike makers can offer battery-free models backed by a shared swapping network. Delivery and logistics fleets can keep riders moving with one-minute swaps instead of overnight charging. Convenience store chains and apartment operators can host swapping units as a new revenue stream.
4. Benefits
Vehicle makers can sell EVs without the battery, lowering the upfront price for their customers. Riders swap in about one minute with token-based reservation, and the network reports 99.8% uptime and stations every 2 to 3 km in served areas. Franchise partners can earn up to 24% ROI on unused space while Yuma installs and runs the station.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Two- and three-wheelers lead EV adoption in South and Southeast Asia, and separating the battery from the vehicle is becoming a common way to cut purchase prices. Swapping networks hosted by shops, apartments and fuel stations through franchise models let operators expand quickly without owning every site.
6. Other information
Launched in 2023 as a joint venture of Yulu Bikes Pvt. Ltd. and Magna International. Operates in 17 Indian cities with 1,500 charging units, about 50,000 daily swaps and 1.5 billion green kilometres. Partnered with MCD and BSES in Delhi (2023) and began franchise-led operations in 2024.
