1. Technology overview
Amogy Inc. was founded in 2020 by four MIT PhD alumni and is headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, with offices in Houston and Seoul. It uses ammonia as a hydrogen carrier so that power generation, shipping and heavy industry can run on carbon-free fuel that is easier to store and transport than compressed hydrogen.
AMMDrive power systems combine a reactor and a hydrogen-to-power unit. A high-efficiency catalyst cracks ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen with near-complete conversion at low reactor temperatures, and a purification module removes trace ammonia where needed. The hydrogen then feeds an integrated fuel cell or a commercial hydrogen engine genset. Modular units are combined to meet the required load for data centres, utilities, microgrids, industrial sites and vessels.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Ammonia cracking reactor: catalyst splits ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen with near-complete conversion.
- Low-temperature operation: runs at low reactor temperatures for commercial systems.
- Fuel cell option: cracked gas feeds an integrated fuel cell, releasing water and nitrogen.
- Hydrogen engine option: reformate runs a commercially available hydrogen engine genset.
- Modular scaling: units are combined for base-load or load-following operation.
- Catalyst supply: the company also offers its ammonia cracking catalysts as a product.
3. Potential application
Data centre operators in Vietnamese industrial parks could use ammonia-to-power units for backup or firming power. Ports and shipping companies could evaluate ammonia-powered propulsion or shore power for coastal vessels. Fertiliser plants already handling ammonia could pilot distributed clean power on site.
4. Benefits
Provides dispatchable on-site power for base-load, load-following, backup and firming without waiting for grid interconnection or turbine lead times. Capacity can be added, reduced or redeployed because the platform is modular. Dual-fuel operation with optional natural gas supports a gradual transition, and power is generated with zero carbon emissions at the point of use.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Ammonia is emerging as a practical carrier for hydrogen because it can be shipped and stored with existing infrastructure, and Asian utilities, shipbuilders and data centre operators are testing it for low-carbon power. Vietnam's 2024 hydrogen strategy includes green ammonia, and rising data centre and industrial loads in the region increase interest in on-site clean power.
6. Other information
Founded in 2020 by four MIT PhD alumni; commissioned the ATHENA ammonia testing and manufacturing facility in Houston in 2025 and launched operations in Korea the same year. Total funding since inception reached USD 315 million after a USD 15 million strategic investment from GS E&C in November 2025. Partners include GS E&C and the city of Pohang for a distributed power pilot, LOTTE Fine Chemical, 2G Energy, A*STAR and EDB in Singapore.
