1. Technology overview
Bivocom is an IoT hardware company founded in 2014 and headquartered in Xiamen, China. It designs cellular and LoRa routers, gateways, modems and RTUs for industrial, enterprise and smart city projects, helping utilities and integrators connect field equipment that speaks legacy protocols to SCADA systems and the cloud.
Its gateway range includes the TG452 IoT edge gateway, the TG463 industrial 5G NR gateway, the TG462 touch-screen edge gateway and the TG465 programmable 5G edge gateway. The TG465 uses a quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A55 up to 2 GHz with an optional NPU of up to 1 TOPS, runs an OpenWrt-based OS with optional Ubuntu, and supports Python, C/C++ and Docker containers. It handles Modbus RTU/TCP, IEC 101/104, DNP3, OPC UA, MQTT and, with dedicated firmware, IEC 61850 MMS client and server. Bivocom sells through partners in more than 90 countries.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- TG465 programmable 5G gateway: quad-core Cortex-A55 up to 2 GHz with optional NPU up to 1 TOPS.
- Open development: Python, C/C++ and Docker containers on OpenWrt or optional Ubuntu.
- Power protocols: IEC 61850 MMS client and server, IEC 101/104 and DNP3.
- Industrial protocols: Modbus RTU/TCP and OPC UA for legacy and modern devices.
- Cloud upload: MQTT broker and client plus HTTP/TCP with IPsec, OpenVPN, L2TP and GRE VPN.
- Broad range: TG452 edge gateway, TG463 5G NR gateway and TG462 touch-screen gateway.
3. Potential application
A Vietnamese power company or EPC contractor can retrofit 110 kV substations by converting IEC 104 and Modbus meters to IEC 61850 through TG465 gateways. A solar farm or BESS operator can upload inverter and battery data to its SCADA over 5G. A water utility can monitor remote pumping stations and flood sensors.
4. Benefits
Utilities can make existing Modbus and IEC 104 devices appear as IEC 61850-compliant IEDs, extending the service life of legacy equipment during substation modernization. Python, C/C++ and Docker support lets integrators add custom logic without firmware upgrades. Local analytics, such as flagging abnormal transformer temperature trends, can warn before failures. 5G and dual-network options support remote sites with no fixed line.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Grid digitalization, renewable plants and battery storage sites need low-cost gateways that bridge legacy RTU protocols and IEC 61850. Cellular 5G and edge AI make it feasible to analyze data at remote substations and pumping stations. Southeast Asian utilities expanding solar and storage capacity face exactly this mix of old and new equipment.
6. Other information
Founded in 2014 in Xiamen, China, Bivocom has grown from 8 to more than 80 employees and is recognized as a National High-Tech Enterprise. It holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 27001 certification, with product approvals such as CE, RCM and NBTC. Recent activity includes a Southeast Asia telecom BESS partner visit and a Thailand flood-control IoT project.
