1. Technology overview
Cgrain AB was founded in 2013 in Uppsala, Sweden, by Jaan Luup as a joint initiative with the Lantmannen agricultural cooperative, which is now the majority owner. It automates visual grain inspection, which is traditionally done by trained staff looking at samples by eye and is slow, subjective and hard to repeat between sites.
The instrument uses a patented mirror design and high-resolution imaging so that every kernel is photographed from several sides, then analysed with artificial neural network models built with grain specialists. One run delivers kernel-level physical data such as width, length, volume and colour, impurity and defect detection, and sieving data. Cgrain Value Pro gives full access to results and images, and Cgrain Value Sorter, launched in 2024, also splits the sample into two fractions. The system is designed for all small grains.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Patented mirror optics: captures each kernel from multiple angles in high resolution.
- ANN analysis: neural network models trained with grain experts classify defects and impurities.
- Physical metrics: width, length, volume and colour reported kernel by kernel.
- Sieving data: virtual sieving results produced in the same run.
- Cgrain Value Pro: full access to results and kernel images.
- Cgrain Value Sorter: adds a mechanism that splits the sample into two fractions.
3. Potential application
- Flour mills in Vietnam checking imported wheat lots for impurities and damaged kernels at intake.
- Malting and brewing suppliers grading barley for size and defects.
- Feed mills documenting grain quality from multiple suppliers.
4. Benefits
- Objective grading: every kernel is imaged and scored the same way, removing inspector-to-inspector variation.
- More data per sample: size, volume, colour, impurities and sieving results from a single run.
- Traceable evidence: images of each kernel are kept for review and dispute handling.
- Lab-free operation: sorting variant separates defective kernels for further checks.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Grain trade and milling are moving from visual inspection to image-based AI grading to cut labour and disputes, and standards bodies are discussing AI-based visual grain inspection. In Southeast Asia, millers, feed producers and grain importers handling wheat, barley and rice need consistent, documented quality checks at receiving points.
