1. Technology overview
Duro Labs is a Los Angeles company founded by Michael Corr and Kellan O'Connor that builds product lifecycle management software for hardware teams. It targets startups and fast-growing manufacturers in aerospace, defence, robotics and energy that outgrow spreadsheets but find legacy PLM systems slow and costly to deploy. Duro joined Altium in December 2025 and continues as a standalone, CAD-agnostic platform.
Duro Design is an AI-native, API-first PLM. It combines mechanical, electrical and manufacturing BOMs in one place, imports component data from CAD tools, runs change orders with configurable approval workflows, and rolls up cost and lead times using distributor pricing and availability data. AI supports part discovery, change-impact analysis and sourcing insights, and no-code or YAML rules add validation checks. It integrates with SolidWorks, Onshape, Altium 365, NetSuite, Tulip, Jama Software and other systems through a GraphQL API. Users include Gilmour Space, Opentrons, AstroForge and Momentus.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Unified BOM: mechanical, electrical and manufacturing BOMs with revision history.
- CAD data import: component and assembly data from SolidWorks, Onshape and Altium.
- Change control: configurable approval workflows and side-by-side revision comparison.
- Sourcing roll-ups: cost and lead-time roll-ups with distributor pricing and availability.
- AI assistance: part discovery, change-impact analysis and sourcing insights.
- Integrations: GraphQL API with ERP, MES and requirements tools such as NetSuite and Tulip.
3. Potential application
A Vietnamese robotics or drone startup can manage combined electrical and mechanical BOMs and engineering changes before scaling production with an EMS partner. A contract electronics manufacturer can receive released BOMs directly from customers' PLM. A device maker can track component cost and lead-time risk across product revisions.
4. Benefits
Hardware teams get one source of truth for parts, BOMs and revisions across mechanical and electrical design. Cloud hosting removes PLM servers, and onboarding takes three to four weeks according to Duro. Cost and lead-time roll-ups expose supply risks early; Opentrons reports about 50,000 USD saved through redesigned parts and alternative suppliers. SOC 2 Type 2 and an ITAR-compliant environment support aerospace programmes.
5. Market trends & opportunities
New space, robotics and energy hardware companies need disciplined engineering change control early, but cannot wait months for legacy PLM projects. Cloud, API-first PLM with AI help is replacing spreadsheets in these firms. In Vietnam and Southeast Asia, electronics and mechatronics startups selling to global customers face growing traceability demands that call for lightweight PLM.
6. Other information
Duro Labs is based at 1920 Hillhurst Ave, Los Angeles, California, and was co-founded by Michael Corr (CEO) and Kellan O'Connor (COO). It was acquired by Altium and joined in December 2025, while remaining a standalone, CAD-agnostic PLM. Holds a SOC 2 Type 2 report and offers an ITAR-compliant cloud.
