1. Technology overview
Epyr is a French thermal storage company (legal entity EPYR SAS, Paris) that turns renewable electricity into high-temperature industrial heat. Its first installation at the WEPA paper mill in Troyes, designed, built and commissioned in under six months, supplies up to 25 percent of the site steam.
Electric resistors heat air, which warms firebricks that store the energy until a process needs it. The offer bundles technology, system integration, energy management and optional third-party financing, sold as Heat-as-a-Service. Epyr targets paper, food and beverage and chemicals, and was selected for a 35 MWh unit at Papeco.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Resistive heating: electricity heats air through electric resistors.
- Firebrick storage: bricks hold high-temperature energy until needed.
- Steam delivery: supplies industrial process steam.
- Simulator: the site offers a sizing simulator.
- Heat-as-a-Service: technology, integration, energy management and financing in one offer.
3. Potential application
Steam for paper and packaging mills in Vietnam. Process steam for food and beverage plants replacing gas boilers. Heat-as-a-Service pilots at plants that want no upfront capital.
4. Benefits
Cuts gas use: the Troyes unit covers up to 25 percent of site steam.
Heat-as-a-Service with optional third-party financing lowers upfront cost.
Plug-and-play, modular design shortens delivery; first plant built in under six months.
Helps balance the grid by charging at low-price hours.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Industrial steam in paper, food and chemicals is still mostly gas-fired, and electrified thermal storage is moving from pilots to commercial plants in Europe. Similar sectors in Vietnam and ASEAN face rising fuel costs and export customers' decarbonisation demands.
6. Other information
