1. Technology overview
Freshflow was founded in 2021 out of the ETH Zurich AI Lab by CEO Avik Mukhija and operates as Freshflow GmbH in Berlin, with teams across Paris and Berlin. It targets waste and empty shelves in fruit, vegetable and other fresh departments, where short shelf life and volatile demand make manual ordering by produce managers error-prone.
The platform sits on top of a retailer's existing forecasting and replenishment systems rather than replacing them. For each store it forecasts demand, estimates how much of the current inventory is still saleable and proposes order quantities that produce managers can accept or adjust. It is live in stores across Europe, with users including independently operated EDEKA and Carrefour stores, Intermarché, the wholesaler Stroetmann and VOLG.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Store-level demand forecasting: predicts sales per item and store for fresh categories.
- Saleable inventory estimation: accounts for spoilage to estimate what can still be sold.
- Order proposals: suggests quantities that produce managers can accept or adjust.
- Overlay architecture: plugs into existing ERP and replenishment systems.
- ROI calculator: estimates waste and revenue impact before deployment.
- Multi-format support: used by supermarkets, convenience stores and wholesalers.
3. Potential application
- Vietnamese supermarket chains automating daily vegetable and fruit orders per store.
- Fresh-food convenience chains reducing end-of-day disposal of produce.
- Wholesale distributors forecasting fresh demand from franchised or independent stores.
4. Benefits
- Less waste: stores report up to 30% less waste compared with their pre-Freshflow baseline.
- More revenue: up to 4% revenue increase per store from fewer out-of-stocks.
- High adoption: 93% of AI order proposals are accepted by store staff.
- Low disruption: works on top of existing forecasting and replenishment systems.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Fresh produce is the category where grocers lose most to spoilage, and European retailers are adopting AI ordering to meet food waste reduction targets and cope with labour shortages. Supermarket and convenience chains in Southeast Asia, where fresh produce is sold in hot climates with short shelf life, face similar pressure.
