1. Technology overview
Futraheat is a UK industrial heat pump developer founded in 2021 by three founder members and based in Surbiton, Surrey. It targets the gap in electrified steam for small and mid-sized factories, where large centrifugal heat pumps are too big and conventional compressors are inefficient.
Its core technology is the patented TurboClaw, an oil-free sub-megawatt compressor that brings centrifugal-style performance to lower capacities while running at less than half the speed. The first product, Greensteam 360, is a two-stage 300 kW thermal heat pump that recovers waste heat and lifts it by about 60 C to produce process steam up to 150 C, and several units can be combined for up to 1.5 MW. It is designed to retrofit into existing factory infrastructure, and TurboClaw is aimed at steam up to 200 C in future. Early adopters include breweries and other food and drink producers.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- TurboClaw compressor: patented oil-free sub-megawatt compressor running at under half the speed of centrifugal designs.
- Two-stage design: Greensteam 360 uses two TurboClaw stages for a 60 C temperature lift.
- Process steam: delivers steam up to 150 C for industrial processes.
- Modular capacity: 300 kW thermal per unit, combinable up to 1.5 MW.
- Easy retrofit: built to integrate into existing factory steam infrastructure.
- Higher temperature roadmap: TurboClaw technology targets steam up to 200 C.
3. Potential application
Craft breweries and beverage plants in Vietnam could replace small boilers for mashing and cleaning steam. Dairy and food processors could recover refrigeration or wastewater heat to make process steam. Textile finishing workshops could electrify steam for pressing and drying.
4. Benefits
Futraheat states that Greensteam can cut energy use for steam by up to 90% by recovering heat that would otherwise be wasted. The 300 kW unit size suits small and mid-sized factories that cannot justify megawatt-scale heat pumps, and units can be combined up to 1.5 MW as demand grows. The oil-free compressor and retrofit design reduce disruption to existing steam systems.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Most factories need modest amounts of steam below 150 C, yet commercial industrial heat pumps have focused on large plants, leaving small and mid-sized sites dependent on fossil boilers. Vietnam has thousands of small food, beverage and craft brewing facilities using oil, coal or biomass boilers, where compact steam heat pumps could cut fuel costs and emissions.
6. Other information
Futraheat was established in 2021 and is based at 91 Ewell Road, Surbiton, UK. Key funders and partners listed include Innovate UK, the Clean Growth Fund, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Carbon Limiting Technologies, Honeywell, Projective and Synchrony. Its heat pump at Hepworth Brewery in Sussex was reported in January 2026.
