1. Technology overview
HEATEN develops large high-temperature industrial heat pumps that recover waste heat and turn it into process heat. Heaten AS was founded in March 2020 by part of the former Viking Heat Engines leadership, building on ORC engineering work that began in 2010, and the company now has its headquarters and innovation centre in Remscheid, Germany, with a sales office in Kristiansand, Norway.
The HeatBooster is a piston-compressor heat pump that takes water or steam at 10 to 150 C and delivers steam up to 180 C or hot water up to 200 C. Units range from 1 to 10 MW thermal and can be combined in parallel, cascade or two-stage layouts beyond 50 MW. It runs on HFO or natural refrigerants on one hardware platform and keeps high efficiency down to about 20% load. Manufacturing and service are backed by INNIO, with a joint 10 MW plus test bed in Jenbach, Austria. Customers come from food, sugar, pulp and paper, textiles, chemicals, distilleries and steel.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- High output temperature: supplies steam up to 180 C at up to 10 bar(a) and hot water up to 200 C.
- Waste heat input: uses water or steam sources between 10 and 150 C.
- Modular scale: 1 to 10 MW per unit and above 50 MW in parallel, cascade or two-stage systems.
- Refrigerant flexibility: runs HFO or natural refrigerants such as hydrocarbons on one platform.
- Part-load efficiency: keeps high COP down to about 20% thermal load.
- Service network: manufacturing and service backed by strategic partner INNIO.
3. Potential application
Pulp and paper mills in Vietnam could recover heat from paper machine exhaust to supply drying steam. Textile dyeing plants could reuse warm effluent heat for process hot water. Sugar mills and breweries could replace part of their boiler steam with upgraded waste heat.
4. Benefits
HEATEN states typical payback of about 2 to 4 years and 1,000 to 3,000 tonnes of CO2 avoided per year for each HBL4 unit. At Südzucker a heat pump replaced a steam boiler and cut CO2 emissions by 65%, and at MARS food facilities 150 C process heat reduced energy costs by 40%. The company also helps buyers apply for grants that can cover a large share of project costs.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Large industrial sites are looking for ways to cut fuel use for steam, and high-temperature heat pumps that recover existing waste heat are moving from pilots to multi-megawatt projects in Europe. In Vietnam, pulp and paper, textile dyeing, sugar and food plants run large steam systems alongside cooling water and exhaust heat that could be upgraded.
