1. Technology overview
Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies was founded in 2013 and is headquartered in Erlangen, Germany. It addresses the difficulty and cost of storing and moving hydrogen by binding it to a liquid organic hydrogen carrier, so that hydrogen can be handled like an oil with conventional liquid fuel infrastructure at ambient conditions.
StoragePLANTs chemically bind hydrogen to the carrier benzyltoluene in an exothermic, catalytic process at about 200 to 250 degrees Celsius, and the heat released can be reused. ReleasePLANTs recover hydrogen at more than 99.9% purity in an endothermic process at about 250 to 300 degrees Celsius, for hydrogen terminals, hubs and pipeline injection. Plants are skid-based and sized for multi-ton-per-day capacity. The company also offers EPC with Bilfinger, O&M services and a maritime LOHC fuel cell propulsion venture.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- StoragePLANT: binds hydrogen to benzyltoluene at about 15 to 30 barg using a solid catalyst.
- ReleasePLANT: releases hydrogen at more than 99.9% purity at about 2 to 3 barg.
- Heat integration: storage releases about 9 kWh per kg of hydrogen for reuse.
- Flexible coupling: storage plants pair with SMR, large-scale electrolysis and renewables.
- EPC and O&M: project delivery with Bilfinger plus commissioning, maintenance and calibration.
- Maritime applications: LOHC fuel cell propulsion developed in a joint venture with Østensjø Group.
3. Potential application
Green hydrogen developers in Vietnam could store output as LOHC at coastal hubs and ship it to buyers in Japan or Korea using liquid tankers. Petrochemical complexes could receive hydrogen in liquid form and release it on site. Port operators could study LOHC terminals that reuse existing tank farms.
4. Benefits
Hydrogen can be stored and shipped as a non-pressurised liquid using existing tankers, tanks and fuel logistics instead of high-pressure or cryogenic equipment. Released hydrogen exceeds 99.9% purity, with ISO quality available after extra purification. Heat from the storage step, about 9 kWh per kg of hydrogen, can be recovered, and plants run round the clock with remote control via a web interface.
5. Market trends & opportunities
As hydrogen trade routes form between renewable-rich exporters and industrial importers, carriers that reuse oil and chemical logistics are gaining attention. Japan, Korea and Singapore are building import chains, and Vietnam's 2024 hydrogen strategy targets production and export, which requires practical storage and transport options for ports and industrial clusters.
6. Other information
