1. Technology overview
John Cockerill Hydrogen is the hydrogen business of the John Cockerill group, whose site refers to over 200 years of history. It designs and manufactures alkaline electrolyzers, with production and assembly in Seraing (Belgium), Belfort and Aspach (France) and Wildau (Germany).
On 13 July 2026 the company announced its first 5 MW electrolyzer stack manufactured and assembled in France, in Belfort, and a new 40 MW production phase in Aspach for a green hydrogen project in the Netherlands. In July 2025 it acquired key assets of McPhy, including the Belfort plant.
2. Highlighted features & specifications
- Alkaline electrolyzers: industrial-scale units for green hydrogen production.
- 5 MW stack: first stack made and assembled in Belfort, France (July 2026).
- Serial production: new 40 MW production phase at Aspach.
- Project delivery: electrolyzers delivered for a 25 MW plant in Belgium.
- Multi-site manufacturing: Seraing, Belfort, Aspach and Wildau teams.
3. Potential application
Large green hydrogen plants in Vietnam linked to renewable power. Fertilizer and refinery hydrogen replacement. Local assembly partnerships with Vietnamese industrial groups.
4. Benefits
Multiple European production sites give supply options for large projects. A track record of 25 MW delivered in Belgium and 40 MW in production for the Netherlands is reported on the site. Alkaline technology suits utility-scale hydrogen with lower cost per kW. Acquired McPhy assets broaden the technology base.
5. Market trends & opportunities
Alkaline technology still dominates electrolyzer deployment worldwide, and European manufacturers are localizing stack production. Southeast Asian markets are expected to need locally supported suppliers as hydrogen projects develop.
6. Other information
Part of the John Cockerill group (200+ years of history per the site). Acquired McPhy key assets on 8 July 2025 after a Belfort Commercial Court decision. Founding year of the hydrogen unit not stated.
